A driver attempting to pull into the Hoquiam McDonald’s drive-thru shortly after 8 a.m. Friday was rear-ended by a Jeep that witnesses said was “traveling at a high rate of speed,” according to the Hoquiam Police Department.

“The truck ended up careening into the dumpster area next to the drive-thru line,” said Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers.

The driver was transported to Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital in Aberdeen.

“The driver of the Jeep had a suspended license, however due to a just issued court decision out of Thurston County, (the state Department of Licensing) has been ordered to vacate all suspensions in the third degree because the court ruled your license cannot be suspended for failure to pay a traffic ticket, only for failing to respond or appear in court,” said Myers.

“The court determined it is a violation of someone’s rights to require them to pay a traffic ticket if they cannot afford to pay the fine.”

The Jeep driver was cited for no valid driver’s license, following too close (resulting in a collision) and no insurance, said Myers.
