Cosplay season kicked off Feb. 11 with Masquerade at Events on Emerson

Revelers dressed as favorite anime characters, comic book villians

The flyer for the event pretty much said it all: “Zucchini Volcano LLC presents Masquerade: Grays Harbor’s Nerdiest Ball.”

The Feb. 11 celebration at Events on Emerson was sponsored by Tectonic Comics and Books in South Aberdeen. Beats were provided by Hoquiam DJs Adam Harris, Kameron Covall and Jerrod Phelps of Harbor Soundwave. Those in attendance included revelers dressed as characters from the anime show Dragon Ball Z, DC Comics villain Harley Quinn, another DC villain, the Joker, and many more.

Organizer Steven Puvogel said masks were not required but costumes were encouraged. This event was Grays Harbor County’s preview to the cosplay season at larger venues like the Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, now in its 15th year, which draws thousands annually and will be held March 2-5 at the Seattle Convention Center.
