Vard Stieglitz, veteran Aberdeen naval officer and jeweler, has been promoted to the rank of captain, according to word received here from the navy department by Mrs. Stieglitz.

Until his promotion, Stieglitz was serving with the naval high command on Eniwetok. In a recent letter to his family, though he was unable to divulge the exact nature of his work, he said he was attached to the naval service command on Guam. He said he spends a great deal of his time at Saipan.

“For a man who hates flying as much as I do, I am certainly doing a lot of it,” he said in a letter home.

For the first time in at least a half-dozen years, the Harbor will have no returning all-Southwest Washington gridders on hand next fall.

Five seniors — four from Aberdeen and one from Hoquiam — make up the local representation on the 1969 AAA all-SWW team selected jointly by sports editors of the Daily World, Daily Olympian, Longview News and Vancouver Columbian.

Named to the offensive team were three Bobcats: fullback Dan Kivi, tackle John Ketola and split end Jack Hansen.

Hoquiam’s Dan Daly was a defensive choice at linebacker, along with Aberdeen defensive end Rich Van Volkinburg.

Kivi and Van Volkinburg, both unanimous choices, are repeaters from the 1968 team as is Olympia guard Kit Blue.

Montesano’s quest for Kingbowl XVIII was born in the wake of a bitter state semifinal football loss the previous year.

The Bulldog underclassmen gathered after a last-minute Lynden Christian field goal had ended Monte’s 1993 state championship quest, 24-21 at the Tacoma Dome.

“As soon as it was over, we kind of made a vow to ourselves to go back there and take it one step further,” said standout wide receiver-defensive back Brian Winkelman.

The Bulldogs were as good as their word. with a 12-0 season record, they’ll face similarly unbeaten Royal for the state Class A title Saturday at Seattle’s Kingdome.
