Sept. 19, 1941

Donating their services, Grays Harbor carpenters will descend on Franklin Field en masse tomorrow to build the city’s new fire tower.

Whether the tower, 65 feet high and designed for training for all Harbor fire fighters, can be completed in one day depends upon the number of carpenters who show up tomorrow, firemen said.

Sept. 19, 1966

• A 3-year-old Bellevue boy was killed yesterday in Ocean Shores when a floating log on which he was playing in the surf rolled over him and crushed his skull.

The tragic accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on the beach just north of the main Ocean Shores development.

• Don Meredith has finally shaken the “quarterback curse” and may even become a household word again in Texas.

Meredith, who has spent a rather mediocre six years in the NFL after a sensational collegiate career at Southern Methodist, had his most rewarding day as a pro Sunday when he tossed five touchdown passes in leading the Dallas Cowboys to a 52-7 rout of the New York Giants.

Joe Namath didn’t look like he was worth $400,000 Sunday. He looked like he was worth a million dollars.

The New York Jets celebrated quarterback had his finest day as a pro Sunday when he tossed five touchdown passes to lead the Jets to a stunning 52-13 triumph over the Houston Oilers.

Sept. 19, 1991

• The City of Aberdeen last night came one step closer to buying the Wynooche Dam.

The City Council voted to liquidate a trust fund established 10 years ago solely to make annual payments on its $23 million debt at the dam. The city was able to negotiate and get Congress to agree to one outright payment now of $4.9 million, rather than continued payments plus interest for the next 20 years.

• Six weeks ago, Aberdeen police stopped a car and identified the five young occupants as members of “The Poison Posse,” a street gang from the Tacoma area.

Aberdeen police have been waging a quiet war against street gangs since March. Chief Bill Ellis has assigned two police officers to a special “gang investigation team.”

It appears that the big city gangs are only scouting the Harbor area at present, police say. The police are trying to make the scouts bearers of bad news when they go home.
