BOYS PREP SOCCER

Elma 6, Tenino 0

Elma had the finishing touch in the second half of a 6-0 win over Tenino on Friday in Tenino.

The Eagles (4-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 1A Evergreen) had several opportunities to score in the first half against the Beavers (1-4, 1-4), but led just 1-0 at the half thanks to a goal from junior midfielder Ivan Rodriguez off an assist from freshman forward Ian Ahlquist in the 15th minute.

“We had good ball movement up to about 20-25 yards and then settled for a long shot and didn’t really put any pressure on their defense,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “We talked about some things at halftime and in the second half we did a much better job of making dangerous runs through, getting more people in the box and doing all the things you have to do to generate some goals.”

The Eagles took the coaching staff’s advice to heart, scoring seven minutes into halftime when junior forward Manny Venegas filled in the space of a previous run from Rodriguez, collected a flick pass Rodriguez and scored to go up 2-0.

That opened the floodgates as the junior forward Luis Torres scored on an assist from Venegas in the 54th minute with Torres returning the favor for a Venegas goal eight minutes later.

Two goals in the final 15 minutes from sophomore midfielder Jordan Kain, the latter on a header off a Rodriguez corner kick, capped off Elma’s second-half performance.

“Once we were able to get control of the game in the second half, we were able to keep the scoring going throughout,” Seaberg said. “We talked about not being a selfish player by making runs that you know you’re not going to receive the pass but are creating space for a teammate behind you. … It was all the things you have to do to create dangerous situations in front of the goal, and they did it.”

Elma goalkeeper Trey Yeager made what Seaberg said were “two fantastic saves” in the second half to earn the clean-sheet shutout.

Elma kept pace with Montesano and Raymond-South Bend atop the 1A Evergreen League standings with the win.

The Eagles sit in third place with 13 points, two behind the Ravens and three back of the first-place Bulldogs.

Elma hosts Chief Leschi at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Aberdeen 5, Black Hills 0

Despite missing multiple starters, Aberdeen remained unbeaten with a 5-0 shutout over Black Hills on Friday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

Missing four starters due to various reasons, the Bobcats (7-0, 2-0 2A Evergreen) didn’t miss a beat against the Wolves (1-4-1, 0-2), scoring four goals in the first half while dominating the pace of play.

The Bobcats scored eight minutes into the game when senior midfielder Angel Corona connected a pass to junior midfielder Josh Alcala on the right wing. Alcala got around a Wolves defender and sent a cross from the end line to senior forward Gonzalo Blanes, who one-timed it into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Aberdeen made it 2-0 when Blanes headed in a cross from Alcala.

Aberdeen extended the lead to 3-0 in the 23rd minute when senior midfielder Tyson Dunlap sent a ball to down the left sideline to junior midfielder Gibran Garcia, who raced to the end line and crossed an angled pass back to Alcala for a goal.

With 4:50 left to play in the first half, Dunlap converted off a rebound of a Garcia shot for a 4-0 halftime lead.

Garcia figured into the final goal of the game when he intercepted a pass, split two Wolves defenders and scored on a breakaway in the 73rd minute.

“We had some breakdowns on defense and were lucky not to give up a couple of goals, but besides that were passed crisply and communicated well,” said Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming, who commended the play of senior defenders Edgar Ceja, Ryker Scott, midfielders Corona and Angel Garcia, and Ricky Granados and Yoanis Chignesse. “Our attacking play was multidimensional and was fun to watch.”

With the win, Aberdeen sits alone in first place in the 2A Evergreen League with six points, two above second-place Tumwater.

Aberdeen’s JV team won 4-0 on Friday. Gerardo Servellon had three goals with Dylan Reyes also scoring a goal for the Bobcats.

Luis Arevalo, Axel Rodriguez and Emilio Lopez were commended for their hustle by Aberdeen assistant coach Romeo Sanchez.

Montesano 3, Rochester 1

Montesano remained on top of the 1A Evergreen League with a 3-1 win over Rochester on Friday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (5-1-1, 5-0-1 1A Evergreen) got a goal from junior midfielder Daniel Schallon off a cross from junior Brady Whipple in the 16th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead over the Warriors (4-3, 4-2).

Monte doubled the lead when senior midfielder Cris Tobar scored off a feed from senior midfielder Terek Gunter with 10 minutes to play in the half.

Rochester would score on just before the half on what Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez said was “a lapse of judgement on the backside” to lead 2-1 at the break.

“I was kind of disapointed to see that happen because we were taking control of the game,” Sanchez said. “We should be winning and controlling them comfortably, so go out there and do your job and they did.”

An insurance goal from recent junior varsity call-up Emery Watson in the 66th minute sealed the victory and kept the Bulldogs on top of the 1A Evergreen League.

Watson now has three goals in two varsity games and has drawn praise from the coaching staff.

“Him and Terek Gunter are pretty much the fastest kids on any pitch any given night. He’s super fast, that’s why we brought him up. He can just burn,” Sanchez said. “He’s picking up the game so quickly. He’s a quick-learner with speed.”

Montesano had 18 shots in the game, 10 on target, while allowing just one Warriors shot.

The Bulldogs JV team won 5-0 on Friday. Watson scored a goal in the game while senior defender Jayvin Painter scored his first prep goal in the victory.
