Wednesday Prep Roundup: Aberdeen’s Hurd blows past field in EvCo meet

Aberdeen senior Kyle Hurd bested the field by more than a minute at the Centralia meet on Wednesday.

CENTRALIA — Aberdeen’s Kyle Hurd bested the field by more than a minute to win an Evergreen 2A Conference meet at Borst Park in Centralia on Wednesday.

Hurd finished the course in 17:32.12 to win the boys race by 1:10, while Aberdeen’s Faith Cardenas finished the girls course in 22:27.18 to place third.

Black Hills won the boys team title in the three-team meet with 28 points, followed by Centralia at 41 and Aberdeen at 63. Centralia topped the girls competition with 30 points to 36 by Black Hills and a talley of 65 for Aberdeen.

Aberdeen’s Dayln Barragan finished eighth on the boys side with a time of 19:44.20.

Highclimbers nip Bobcats on tiebreaker

SHELTON — It came down to the number of games won, but Shelton came away with a victory over Aberdeen in a non-league match at Shelton on Wednesday.

Aberdeen (5-2) dominated singles play, but Shelton swept the doubles matches. Each team won six sets so it came down to games to decide a winner and Shelton won 45 games as a team compared to 41 for Aberdeen.

Ryan Solan, Harlan Troy and Luis Garcia each needed just two sets to earn a victory in singles play for the Bobcats.

“Our singles are running through the opponents like a buzz saw,” Aberdeen coach Andy Duffy said. “Our No. 2 and No. 3 players are undefeated and Ryan is doing what he needs to do to get wins.”

Aberdeen hosts Black Hills on Friday.

BOYS GOLF

Bearcats 223, Bobcats 230

Led by a 38 from Will Alexander, Chehalis defeated Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference meet at Highland Golf Course on Wednesday.

While Alexander took medalist honors, Brendan King set the pace for the Bobcats with a 40 followed closely by a 42 from teammate Grant Larson.

“You never feel good about a loss, but we sure feel good about the way we rebounded from our match on Monday,” Aberdeen coach Dan Sundstrom said. “They rebounded nicely and came back with a 230. Brendan and Grant had solid rounds and they have had solid rounds the whole season.”

Aberdeen hosts Tumwater at Grays Harbor Country Club on Monday.
