Tuesday Prep Roundup: Elma soccer stuns Hoquiam in overtime

BOYS SOCCER

Eagles 3, Grizzlies 2 (OT)

ELMA — Trace Thompson scored two minutes into overtime as Elma completed a remarkable turnaround by edging Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League showdown Tuesday at Davis Field.

Avenging an 8-1 defeat at the hands of the Grizzlies the previous week, the Eagles (5-2, 7-7-1) moved into a tie for the league lead with Hoquiam (5-2, 9-5) with one match apiece remaining.

Elma will host winless Tenino tonight. The Grizzlies close out their regular season by entertaining Forks on Thursday.

Hoquiam owns the tiebreaker advantage and would gain the league’s top-seeded district berth in the event of a deadlock.

Elma’s Adonis Torres blocked a Hoquiam clearing pass on one of the first possessions of overtime. Thompson beat the Grizzly goalkeeper to the loose ball and slid about an 8-yard shot into the corner of the net.

After giving up a goal on Hoquiam’s opening possession last week, the Eagles needed only 1:48 to open the scoring Tuesday. Taking a pass from Thompson, Torres curled about a 20-yard shot into the net.

The Eagles made it 2-0 about 10 minutes later. After a handball call gave the Eagles a penalty kick, Thompson buried the spot kick.

The Grizzlies answered in the 25th minute. Connor Darras dribbled from midfield to about the 18-yard line, crossing a pass to Andy Garcia. The latter one-timed it into the net.

Hoquiam equalized on a near-identical play about five minutes into the second half. Naz Mazariegos scored this one, off a Darras assist.

In retrospect, Elma coach Carson Seaberg said the first goal was particularly critical.

“That gives you confidence,” he said. “Also, our defense was much better. I told my team going back, you have to go hard for the full 80 minutes and you have to be structurally sound. For the most part, we were structurally sound throughout the game.”

He cited Thompson, Torres, Doug Westcott and steady senior fullback Isaac Horton for particularly fine performances.

“I was disappointed in the first 10 minutes. We should never go on the road and play like that,” HHS coach Fidel Sanchez said. “After that we settled down and we battled. We played well (but) we didn’t play a complete good game.”

Sanchez credited James Courneya and Juventino Perez with fine performances.

Bulldogs 3, Spartans 0

FORKS — Doing all its scoring in the second half, Montesano downed Forks in an Evergreen 1A League game Tuesday at Spartan Stadium.

Monte’s Nicolai Vikkelsoe opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the 50th minute.

About 10 minutes later, Kyle Cox took a pass from Michael Malpass and beat the goalkeeper on a one-on-one opportunity.

Montesano’s Riccardo Marangon concluded the scoring with about 10 minutes remaining, off an assist from Vikkelsoe.

“We talked at halftime about controlling the middle of the field and we did a much better job of that (in the second half,” Bulldog coach Rick Denholm said.

He cited the entire team with a solid performance.

The Bulldogs (4-3, 5-8-2) close out league play Thursday at home against Tenino.

The host Fishermen swept team honors. With 173 points, Ilwaco topped runner-up Raymond by 18 points. Ilwaco scored 153 points to finish 56 ahead of Naselle.

Freeman swept the throwing events and also won the girls 100 hurdles. Her shot put mark of 36-5 was not far off her personal best.

Brooke Friese and Hannah Cook were double winners for Willapa Valley’s girls. Friese won the 200 meters and pole vault, while Cook prevailed in the long hurdles and triple jump.
