Elma, Hoquiam and Montesano all win in volleyball

VOLLEYBALL

Eagles beat Aberdeen

Jalyn Sackrider and Quin Mikel combined for 17 kills as Elma swept past Aberdeen in a non-league match Tuesday at Sam Benn Gym.

Sackrider delivered nine kills and added five blocks. Mikel added eight kills.

Versatile Eagle setter Kenna Stoney contributed 20 assists, four kills and eight digs. Anna Perez brought up 14 digs.

“We kept the energy high the whole match,” Elma coach Kendra Henry said.

Holly Bergeson led Aberdeen hitters with eight kills. Izabella Gill was also cited for serving and hitting.

“We served a lot better than we did last week against Monte and a couple of our hitters came alive,” Bobcat coach Doug Basler said. “What killed us was team defense and just rally-killing mistakes.”

Aberdeen took the JV match, 25-23, 25-13.

The Bobcats (0-2) make the short trip to Hoquiam tonight. On Thursday, Elma (2-0) hosts Cascade Christian.

Grizzlies in three

TOLEDO — Kamimi Papp contributed 11 kills and 14 digs as Hoquiam trounced Toledo, 25-16, 25-21, 25-11, in a non-league match Tuesday at Toledo.

ReyLynn Dunn brought up 28 digs and Kacey Pelan had 24 assists for the Grizzlies (2-1). Hoquiam coach Heather Bozich cited Karlie Krohn for outstanding passing on serve-receive.

“They worked hard tonight,” Grizzly coach Heather Bozich said. “They communicated well and made smart choices.”

Hoquiam won the junior varsity match in two sets.

The Grizzlies host rival Aberdeen tonight.

Bulldogs in three

ROCHESTER — Montesano started fast and cruised to a 25-11, 25-22, 25-22 win at Rochester in non-league action Tuesday.

Hannah Hatcher dished out 29 assists for the Bulldogs (2-2). Zoe Hutchings led Monte hitters with 11 kills. McKenna Miller had four kills, while Lindsay Pace was commended for serving and hitting.

“Our passing was better for sure (than in Monday’s loss to Castle Rock),” Monte coach Renee Volz commented. “Our momentum was up.

The Bulldogs won the JV match in three sets and the C squad contest in two.

Montesano will make its annual appearance in Yakima’s SunDome Invitational on Friday.

Wildcats win in three

OYEHUT — Kaylee Barnum blasted nine aces and 14 kills as Ocosta trounced North Beach, 25-9, 25-23, 25-14, in a non-league battle of Pacific League rivals on Tuesday at Oyehut.

Wildcat coach Barbara Rasmus cited Olivia Marsh for net play, Lillyan Barnum for back row defense and Serena Herman for reserve play.

Ocosta (2-0) used reserves extensively in the second set.

Mariah Vogler topped the Hyaks (0-2) with eight kills. First-year Hyak coach Sharayah Miller cited Ruby Pope for serving and Natasha Fruh for all-around play.

“They played better tonight than they did (last week) in South Bend,” Miller said.

The Wildcats also won the junior varsity and C squad contests.

North Beach is home against Wishkah tonight. On Thursday, Ocosta hosts Pe Ell.

Vikings in three

MENLO — Willapa Valley easily remained unbeaten by trouncing Ilwaco, 25-11, 25-14, 25-20, in a non-league match Tuesday at Tenoski Gym.

Viking setter Sidney Pollard had 17 assists and six digs, while Grace Hodel led Valley hitters with six. Katie Adkins and Hannah Cook were credited with fine passing while receiving serves.

“We’re improving each time we play and tonight we played a lot more aggressively at the net,” Viking coach Lori Snodgrass said.

Willapa Valley also won the JV match, 25-5, 25-11.

The Vikings (3-0) face Willapa Harbor rival Raymond on Thursday.

Tribe falls in five

SOUTH BEND — Wahkiakum outlasted South Bend, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-25, 15-11, in a non-league match Tuesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

Karley Reidinger paced the Indians with 10 kills.

The Mules also won the JV match in two sets.

Now 1-1 overall, the Indians host Naselle on Thursday.

Gulls lose in four

NAPAVINE — Talented Napavine topped Raymond, 25-18, 25-12, 23-25, 25-17, in a non-league match Tuesday at Napavine.

Karlee Freeman had 18 kills and served five aces, while Maddi Murray put down eight kills for the Gulls (2-1).

Raymond coach Bob Swogger wasn’t too disappointed with his team’s showing.

“They could very well be the district champions and we competed well against an excellent team,” Swogger said.

Napavine won the JV match in three sets.

The Gulls host rival Willapa Valley in a non-leaguer Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bulldogs 7, Warriors 2

MONTESANO — Lexi Lovell, Samantha Stanfield and Anna Ayres scored two goals apiece as Montesano routed Rochester in a non-league match Tuesday at Rottle Field.

Lovell converted a pass from Peyton Poler in the ninth minute and also scored in the 50th minute. She also assisted on two goals and was credited by Bulldog coaches with excellent passing.

Stanfield found the net twice in the final three minutes of the first half to extend Monte’s halftime lead to 4-0. Ayres scored in the 19th minute and added Montesano’s final goal.

Zoee Lisherness provided the other goal for the Bulldogs (2-0).

“We had quite a few possessions, like we did against Aberdeen,” Bulldog assistant coach Rick Denholm said. “We got a lot of girls a lot of playing time.”

Montesano visits King’s Way Christian for a battle of district favorites on Thursday.

Eagles 4, Wildcats 2

ELMA — Defender Rebeka Lensegrav scored twice as Elma beat La Center in a non-league match Tuesday at Davis Field.

Lensegrav scored her first goal off an indirect kick, then volleyed one home from some 40 yards out.

Kaelyn Burgher and Kassedy Olson tallied the other two Eagle goals. Jayla Mason and Brooke Sutherby were credited with assists.

“The girls passed really well,” Elma coach Scott Rockey said. “Our possession was good and obviously we were able to find the goal this time.”

Lensegrav, Olson and Hannah Hartley were commended by Rockey for fine performances.

The Eagles (2-1-1) hit the road Thursday to face Castle Rock.

Tigers 4, Grizzlies 0

Class 2A Centralia beat Hoquiam in a non-league contest Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

Details were not reported. Hoquiam (0-2) travels to Seton Catholic on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF

Chinooks 187, Grizzlies 192

WOODLAND — Led by Hayden Johnson’s 42, Kalama outshot Hoquiam in a Southwest Washington 1A League match Tuesday at the Lewis River Golf Course.

Josh Burgher shot 43 and Ryan Cole 45 for Hoquiam, but no other Grizzly broke 50.

“It was a very tight course and we didn’t manage it well,” HHS coach Larry Dublanko said. “Having said that, we have a pretty young team. We had some inexperience, jitters, and that’s to be expected.”

The Grizzlies play host to Seton Catholic on Thursday at Highland Golf Course.
