Ocosta boys place second, Raymond’s Gardner wins four events at 2B District 4 Championships

Raymond’s Kyra Gardner and the Ocosta Wildcats boys team had some outstanding performances at the 2B District 4 Track & Field Championships on Thursday in Rainier.

Gardner claimed district titles in four different events, winning the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.32, the triple jump with a season-best 35-0.75, the long jump with a mark of 15-11.75 and the high jump with a clearance of 5-06, besting Pacific League champion Devyn Martin of Ocosta by six inches.

Raymond head coach Mike Tully said Gardner “had another outstanding meet” and implied the talented junior could have matched the 5-08 mark she hit at the Pacific League Championships a week earlier had it not been for how the meet played out.

“The high jump took a long time to complete due to girls leaving to do other events, so it ended up being the last event she completed,” he said. “She just ran out of gas.”

Gardner’s performance helped Raymond to a fifth-place finish overall with 49 points

Ocosta (44 points) placed seventh with North Beach (35) finished in the top 10 in ninth place.

Led by some top finishes from Dylan Todd and twin brothers William and Matthew Idso, Ocosta’s boys team placed second overall with 82 points, just for points behind district champion Kalama.

William Idso cleared 6-01 to win the high jump over North Beach’s Kyle Fry (5-08) and placed second in both the 100 and 200 meter races, with personal-best times of 11.37 and 22.84, respectively.

Matthew Idso claimed a district championship in the 400 meters, running a personal best 52.32 to win the race by more than a second over Adna’s Zach Berg (53.38 PR).

Todd placed third in the 1,600 meter race with a time of 4:59.06 and second in the 3,200 with a time of 11:06.78.

The trio also teamed up with Orlando Guevara on Ocosta’s 4×400 relay team to take second behind Adna with a time of 3:41.97.

North Beach’s 4×400 team of Charlie Coburn, Westin Fruh, Asher Baggaley and Jeshurun Richards placed third behind Ocosta with a time of 3:42.58.

Skyler Langston also had a top five finish for the Hyaks in the girls competition, placing third in the 1,600 (6:11.88) and fourth in the 3,200 (13:50.44), both season-best times for the North Beach junior.

The game remained tied through the two overtime periods and went to penalty kicks, where after numerous misses from both teams, the eight penalty-kick shooter for Centralia scored to hand Aberdeen the loss.
