Aberdeen made the plays it needed to at critical moments to emerge with a 3-1 victory over Elma on Thursday at Elma High School.

The Bobcats (2-2 overall) won the first two games 25-19 and 25-22, scoring five straight points when Game 2 was tied at 19-all to seize control.

Elma (2-3 overall) — which beat Aberdeen 3-0 on Sept. 9 in Aberdeen — responded with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

But led by an improved service game and defensive effort, Aberdeen won the final set 25-23 to take the 3-1 road victory.

“Our serves and defense were key factors tonight,” Aberdeen head coach Desiree Glanz said. “We were where we needed to be on defense. We had some pretty exciting rallies and the girls were all over the floor covering their zones.”

Senior Michelle Jauregui and sophomore Emmersyn Yakovich led the way for Aberdeen with seven kills apiece.

Yakovich also had three aces in the contest.

Freshman Lilly Camp added four kills and four blocks while Libero Claire Mottinger had seven digs for the Bobcats.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Elma 6, Napavine 1

Elma pulled away from Napavine with a big second half en route to a 6-1 victory on Thursday at Davis Field in Elma.

It was a tale of two halves for the Eagles, playing to a 1-1 tie at halftime before erupting for five goals in a second-half offensive blitz.

“In the first half, the way we were playing gave (Napavine) confidence that they could stay in the game,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said. “Once we started to dictate the game and play it our way, they couldn’t keep up.”

Elma (2-2-1 overall) opened the scoring on a penalty-kick conversion from freshman forward Beta Valentine 15 minutes into the game.

Napavine (2-1) tied the game at the end of the first half, scoring on a ball that was pin-balled around the box after a long throw in.

Tied 1-1, Elma changed the complexion of the game seven minutes into the second half when Valentine got the ball in the 18-yard box, turned and ripped a shot into the upper corner for a 2-1 lead.

Valentine completed a hat trick when she converted a one-timer off a nice cross from midfielder Miley Seaberg for a 3-1 lead in the 60th minute.

Then Elma’s Chloe Clark put her mark on the game. The senior forward scored two goals within four minutes — the first an open shot off an assist from Valentine in the 64th minute followed by a tenacious run through the Napavine defense for a goal in the 68th minute.

Seaberg scored on a break in the 71st minute to secure the Elma victory.

“We just needed to calm down, mostly our minds. We were a little too frantic,” Coach Valentine said of Elma’s first-half performance. We just needed to calm down and get more width, as soon as we did that we started getting more opportunities.”

Aberdeen 3, Rochester 1

Though it played what their head coach called “an uneven game,” Aberdeen figured things out to earn a 3-1 victory over Rochester on Thursday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (4-1 overall, 2-1 2A Evergreen League) fell behind just seven minutes into the match on the Warriors’ first scoring chance of the game, a header that found its way to the back of the Aberdeen net.

But Aberdeen settled in and tied the game when freshman midfielders Abby Mainio and Delaney Shoemaker created an opportunity for junior forward Marina Marll, who scored in the 18th minute.

Early in the second half, Aberdeen senior midfielder Lexi Durr received a foul and freshman defender Scotlyn Lecomte scored on the subsequent free kick to put Aberdeen up 2-0 in the 51st minute.

In stoppage time, Shoemaker sent a cross to sophomore forward Annie Troeh, who put the ball in the back of the net for a 3-1 victory.

“Our play is on a roller coaster at the moment. We look great at times and at others we are all wondering why we make the choices we do,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “It’s due to the inexperience but we are working hard to improve each day and in the end we did get another league win so it was a good night.”

Aberdeen’s JV team won 3-0, with Aliyah Burkett scoring a pair of goals for the Bobcats.
