GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Black Hills 3, Aberdeen 2 (BH wins 3-2 on penalty kicks)

With the game tied at the end of overtime, two missed Bobcats penalty kicks stopped them just short of their first league victory in a 3-2 loss to Black Hills at Stewart Filed on Thursday night.

Black Hills (5-5, 4-0) edged the penalty kicks 3-2, an outcome that Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming was worried about once the refs blew the final whistle at the end of overtime.

“I was a little worried about PK’s. They have an advantage because they were a little more experienced,” he said. “We put the practice in but that was the first time they had to do it under pressure and that makes a big difference.”

Aberdeen (2-7, 0-4), surrendered the first goal of the game in the first half when Kaeli Plottner got room near the top of the box and beat Aberdeen keeper Charlize Guiterrez as she done to her right in the 35th minute.

The Bobcats evened the score up two minutes later when Emmy Walsh pressured Wolves keeper Devin Herbert while she was attempting clear the ball away from the goal. Herbert’s clearing attempt hit Walsh in the midsection, sending the bouncing ball into the back of the net to tie the score.

Walsh struck again in the 65th minute when she got a step on her defender and launched a high shot from outside the box that sailed over Herbert’s head to give the Bobcats the lead.

Aberdeen appeared to be headed toward victory but the Wolves got the equalizer with less than five minutes left in regulation.

After a few minutes of sustained pressure, the Wolves drew even when Guiterrez had trouble handling a hard shot from Cassady MacWhorter. Guiterrez got most of the shot but not enough of it to keep it out of the net, putting the score at 2-2.

Fleming said he was encouraged by the progress his team has been showing lately despite the loss and isn’t too concerned with the team’s place in the 2A Evergreen standings.

“There’s a chance to make the playoffs but that’s not my big goal,” he said. “I really just want to get better and I feel like we’re doing that this week.”

Hoquiam 2, Tenino 1

Hoquiam pulled out a close one on the road at Tenino, using a second-half goal from Taylor Strom to to secure the 2-1 victory.

Tenino opened up the scoring in the 30th minute when the Beavers (8-2-1, 2-1) finished a cross into the box but the Grizzlies (7-4-1, 2-2) tied the game up a minute later with a goal from Emily MacFadden.

MacFadden took a shot from a sharp angel and put away her own rebound when the keeper mishandled it to knot up the score heading into halftime.

Strom came through with her game-winning goal early in the second half off of a free kick into the box from Maya Jump.

Both teams had their chances on goal in a physical second half but Hoquiam survived in a match that head Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann feeling positive about where his team is at this point in the season.

“I was really proud of the way our girls played tonight, this was our finest performance of the season,” he said. “Now is the time to start peaking as we approach the second half of league play.”

The win puts Hoquiam in second place behind Tenino in the 1A Evergreen league.

Tenino 1 0 – 1

Montesano 2, Raymond-South Bend 0

The Montesano Bulldogs rebounded after losing its first match of the season earlier this week to down the Raymond-South Bend Riptide, 2-0, on Thursday in Raymond.

Monte forward Jaiden Morrison scored both goals for the Bulldogs (9-1-1, 2-1 Evergreen 1A). The freshman took a pass from midfielder Brooke Streeter up the wing, cutback to the middle of the pitch, and tucked a low shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.

Just five minutes later, Morrison followed a Streeter shot that hit the crossbar and put the rebound in the back of the net for the 2-0 final score.

“It was an awkward game,” said Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez, who added that though his team held possession for much of the contest, it wasn’t reflected in the score due to the Bulldogs coaching staff bring up five junior varsity players and mixing them into the lineup. “It was one of those games where we were looking for improvement and to get varsity experience for some of our younger players.”

Raymond-South Bend, a program in its first year of existence, moves to 3-5 on the season, 0-3 in the 1A Evergreen league.
