ILWACO — South Bend remains undefeated thanks to producing scores both on the ground and through the air in a SWW 2B Coastal Division matchup at Ilwaco on Friday night.

South Bend (1-0, 5-0) put up the only two touchdowns of the first half with a 12-yard touchdown run by Ben Byington in the first quarter and a 2-yard touchdown run by Drew Rose in the second. The score remained 14-0 until the fourth quarter when Ben Byington scored on a 2-yard run and later Drew Rose connected with Chase Flynn for a 5-yard touchdown pass, closing out the game with a score of 28-0.

South Bend head coach Shane Byington cited the intensity of the defense.

“I’d like to single out the defense for getting a shutout for the second week in a row against a really good opponent like Ilwaco,” Byington said.

Josiah Markwell had a big night at linebacker with 19 tackles and a fumble recovery. Offensively, Byington noted the play of the offensive line against a big Ilwaco defensive front and Chase Flynn’s “clutch catches in clutch situations.”
