Elma soccer upsets Montesano and Hoquiam golf wins a battle of first-place teams as we recap a full slate of Twin Harbors prep sports for Tuesday.
GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Elma 2, Montesano 1
When Elma’s Kayli Johnson saw Brooke Sutherby’s corner kick headed towards the near post late in the second overtime period, Johnson knew she had to make a play on it.
“I knew I had to go for it because I didn’t want to go to penalty kicks,” she said.
Johnson’s initial header on the ball was blocked by a Montesano defender, but she buried the rebound to give Elma a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs Tuesday night at Jack Rottle Field.
“This feels amazing because we haven’t beaten them in the three years I’ve been here and it’s awesome to beat them on their home field,” said Jonson.
Elma head coach Scott Rockey said it felt like the holidays came early when he saw Johnson’s shot hit the back of the net.
“This was like Christmas and New Years wrapped into one,” he said. “We’ve been coming to Monte since I’ve been coaching and I’ve been waiting for the win. I was hoping this was going to be the year and here it is.”
The outcome seemed in doubt earlier in the game when Monte’s Zoee Lisherness got free on a run and beat the keeper one-on-one to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.
Sutherby got the equalizer in the second half when she got her head on a ball sent into the box in the 50th minute.
Both teams battled for control near midfield for the next 30 minutes before regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
Officials mistakenly called the game a draw after 80 minutes of action before allowing the 1A Evergreen matchup to continue into overtime.
Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez gave credit to Elma for a well-executed game plan and didn’t think his team did well sticking to what it does best.
“We lost the game by not doing what we do,” he said. “The girls know that we did not play to our standard, but Elma did a great job doing their thing and putting it on us to do our thing. We didn’t respond well to that.”

Hoquiam 5, Raymond-South Bend 1
Hoquiam forward Sadie Carlyle and midfielder Maya Jump scored two goals apiece as the Grizzlies downed the Raymond-South Bend Riptide, 5-1, on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.
With just over two minutes elapsed, Carlyle scored on a turning shot in the middle of the 18-yard box to give Hoquiam an early 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, the Grizzlies (6-4-1, 1-2 Evergreen 1A) doubled their lead when Jump took an assist from junior Taylor Strom and scored on a high-arcing shot that bounced past Riptide goalkeeper Breanna Bowling.
Carlyle then added her second goal of the game a minute-and-a-half later when she took an assist forward Tauni Hillard and scored to give Hoquiam a 3-0 lead.
A goal from Emily McFadden in the 28th minute off a rebound gave the Grizzlies a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
After the break, Hoquiam scored its fifth goal of the game on a looping shot from 30-yards out off the foot of Jump in the 54th minute.
“We knew after that defeat to Elma on Thursday, this would be a good bounce-back match,” Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann said. “We needed to get some kind of momentum going heading into Tenino on Thursday, which will be a tough one.”
The Riptide (3-4, 0-2 Evergreen 1A) got a goal with 8:45 left to go in the game when sophomore midfielder Ana Silva took the ball on a run down the right hash mark, pushed through the Hoquiam defense, and sent a deflected ball toward teammate Ana Quintana. Quintana then put the ball in the back of the net for the 5-1 final score.
Raymond-South Bend take on Montesano at 7 p.m. Thursday at Raymond High School.
Hoquiam travels to Beaver Stadium to take on Tenino at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Tumwater 3, Aberdeen 0
Aberdeen held possession but couldn’t capitalize on any scoring opportunities in a 3-0 loss at Tumwater on Tuesday.
The Bobcats (0-3, 0-6 Evergreen 2A) gave up the first goal of the when a free kick was mishandled in the 55th minute.
Aberdeen’s Emma Walsh almost got the Bobcats on the board with 15 minutes left in the match but the T-Bird’s keeper got her foot on it to keep the clean sheet intact.
Tumwater (3-6, 3-0) tacked on two more goals late in the second half to put the game out of reach.
“We are improving so much but need to find a way to clear the ball out of our defensive third more efficiently and to finish the good opportunities that we earn,” said Aberdeen coach Larry Fleming.
Aberdeen will continue its search for the first win of the season at Stewart Field against Centralia on Thursday.

Forks 3, Hoquiam 1
Communication issues haunted Hoquiam all night in its 3-1 loss to Forks on Tuesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

The Grizzlies got a 23-dig performance from ReyLynn Dunn, but head coach Heather Bozich wasn’t satisfied with how her team handled Forks’ service game.
“Our serve receive was less than stellar and on top of that our communication was not where it needed it to be. Put those together and you’ll have a tough time winning a match,” she said.

BOYS PREP GOLF
Hoquiam 165, Montesano 174
Josh Burgher led the way and shot a 36 in Hoquiam’s 165-174 win over Monte at Highlands Golf Course on Tuesday.
Hoquiam and Montesano are both now tied at 7-1 in the 1A Evergreen league and are tied for first place.
Burgher’s 36 was followed closely by Brayden Dayton who shot a 39. Michael Jump posted a 43 and Tyler Sundstrom shot a 47 to round out the Grizzlies scoring.
Ben Royer and Payson Parker were co-leaders for Monte — both shooting a 40 — with Ben Willis and Matthew Johnson cracking the top four with scores of 45 and 49, respectively.
Both teams had to deal with some inclement weather as rain soaked the course during the first few holes of the round. Once the rain passed, however, golfers were left with softer greens, causing shots to stick upon landing.
Hoquiam coach Larry Dublanko said he was glad to see his golfers put up strong scores while trying to fix their swing mechanics.
“Several of our guys seem to be struggling with their swing at this stage so they’re kind of pressing through swing adversities and I’m pleased that they hung in there and pushed through.”
Hoquiam will face Elma on Thursday before a rematch with Monte next Tuesday. Both matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Oaksridge Golf Course.
Montesano (174) — Royer (40), Parker (40), Willis (45), Johnson (49)
Hoquiam (165) — Burgher (36), Dayton (39), Jump (43), Sundstrom (47)
