Montesano 15, Hoquiam 10

Montesano used a big inning to rally from a four-run deficit en route to a 15-10 victory over Hoquiam in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Montesano.

Down 3-1, Hoquiam (4-8 overall, 4-6 1A Evergreen) took the lead with four runs in the top of the fourth inning capped by an RBI double from second baseman Ella Folkers.

The Grizzlies added to its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth to put Montesano in an unfamiliar position, down four runs heading into the final three innings of the game.

But Montesano’s bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs highlighted by a grand slam home run from Reghann Fairbairn and an RBI double from Jessica Stanfield to take an 11-7 lead.

Hoquiam scored three runs in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Carron Blood followed later in the frame by back-to-back bases loaded walks to cut Monte’s lead to 11-10.

But Monte scored runs on three straight hits — a Fairbairn double followed by singles from Paige Lisherness and Landree Dohrmann to push the lead to 15-10.

Fairbairn gave up a one-out single to Emily Elders in the top of the seventh before inducing two ground outs to end the game.

Aside from pitching the final 1 2-3 innings, Fairbairn led Monte at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and five RBI.

Stanfield (3-5, 2 2B, 2R, RBI), Grace Geer (2-4, R, 2RBI) and Lisherness (2-4, 2R, 2RBI) all had multi-hit games for the Bulldogs, which had 15 hits as a team.

Hoquiam’s offense had 13 hits, with six players — Elders (2-5, R), Blood (2-5, R, RBI), Charli Sampson-Eastman (2-4, 2B, 4R), Alyssa Perry (2-4, 2R), Tauni Hilliard (2-2, R, 2RBI) and Kaliyah Bailey (2-4, 2B, R, 2RBI) — getting two hits apiece.

Montesano 13, Hoquiam 3

Montesano’s Jessica Stanfield belted a landmark home run to lead the Bulldogs to a 13-3 win over Hoquiam in Game 2 of a doubleheader Tuesday in Montesano.

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the third, Montesano loaded the bases against Hoquiam pitcher Carron Blood.

Stanfield stepped to the plate and belted a no-doubter over the left field fence, driving the ball out of the playing grounds and into the bed of a pick-up truck on Kamilche Avenue.

While she didn’t realize it at the time, Stanfield’s home run not only gave the Bulldogs a 7-3 lead, it tied the all-time school record for home runs in a season with eight.

Montesano (10-2, 8-0 1A Evergreen) scored two in the fourth and four in the sixth, winning the game with a 10-run rule victory on an RBI single by Madi Campbell.

The Bulldogs hammered 13 hits in the game, led by Stanfield (2-3, GS HR, 3B, 2R, 4RBI), Cassadie Golding (3-4, R, 2RBI) and Paige Lisherness (2-3, 2 2B, R, 2RBI).

Hoquiam collected six hits in the game off winning pitcher Reghann Fairbairn (5IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 2K).

The Grizzlies were led by Ella Folkers, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Stanfield didn’t know she had tied the school’s single-season home run record until after the game.

“They just told me,” she said after the win. “I knew I had a few of them, but I didn’t know it was to tie (the record) or anything like that. … I was just going up there looking to hit the ball hard.”

Stanfield’s eight home runs in a truncated season ties her with her older sister Samantha, who hit eight in 2016 and former Montesano state-champion Aubree Pocklington, who set the record in 2009.

“I think it’s awesome to be up there with them,” Stanfield said. “They are some great hitters and knowing I could compete at that level with them is awesome.”

“I’m happy she tied it, but I’m kind of sad she doesn’t have a full season to see how many this girl can really hit,” Monte head coach Pat Pace said, noting in a full season, the Bulldogs would play approximately 27-29 games. “She could have put 20 on the board this year. Who knows?”

The two teams are scheduled to play again on Friday in the regular-season finale before competing in the District 4 Tournament, which is scheduled to begin next Wednesday in Montesano and Elma.
