SOFTBALL

Wildcats 12, Loggers 5

WESTPORT — Ocosta put on a power show in trouncing Onalaska in a non-league game Friday at Dorland Park.

Back-to-back home runs by Mekenna Fletcher and Kristi Raffelson highlighted a five-run first inning that gave the Wildcats (18-1) a permanent lead. Fletcher’s homer, a three-run shot, was the first of her high school career. She drove in five runs on the day.

Kaylee Barnum applied the finishing touches with her 15th homer of the season, also a three-run blast, in the sixth inning.

Erika Snider went the distance in the pitching circle to collect the victory.

The win over the fifth-place team in the perenially powerful Central League also figures to bolster Ocosta’s posteseason’s prospects.

“Huge win,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum affirmed. “We swung the bat really well. It gives us great confidence (going into district). “

The Wildcats are scheduled to field primarily a junior varsity lineup in Wednesday’s non-leaguer at Naselle. They will visit Elma on Friday.

ADNA — A big sixth inning helped Hoquiam take down Adna in a non-league game at Adna on Monday.

The Grizzlies (5-6) put together five hits, including a 3-run home run by ReyLynn Dunn, in the sixth inning to rally for five runs and grab control of the game for good.

“We’ve been struggling at the plate as of late and it was nice to string a few hits together,” Hoquiam head coach Keith Reynvaan said. “Everybody up and down the lineup hit the ball well. Both teams played a very clean game, there was only one walk in the game and no errors.”

Hoquiam travels to Tenino today to make up a rain suspended game from earlier this month.

CASTLE ROCK — Host Castle Rock rallied from a three-run deficit to edge Hoquiam in the opening round of the District IV Class 1A Tournament on Monday.

The Grizzlies (5-12) face Evergreen 1A League rival Montesano in a loser-out game scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

Hoquiam did all its scoring in the third inning. Kyle Larson fought off several two-strike pitches to eventually draw a walk. Then Zack Spradlin, Marques Rivera and Sean McAllister delivered consecutive two-out hits (Rivera’s being a double).

Down 3-1 after five innings, the Rockets also put together a two-out, three-run rally in the fifth. Relieving starter McAllister with the bases loaded and none out, Garrett Bradley retired the next two batters without a run scoring. But a walk forced in one run and a single delivered the tying and go-ahead markers.

The Grizzlies threatened in each of the final two innings. Spradlin led off the sixth by reaching second on a single-error combination. He was ruled out on a disputed call at third, however, and the inning ended with a double play.

Walker Dunn singled and Brody Bennett was hit by a pitch in the seventh before a force play and called third strike ended the game.

“It was a frustrating loss,” HHS coach Steve Jump said. “I really thought we had momentum with a 3-0 lead. I don’t usually complain, but I thought the call at third was crucial for us. It changed the way we played.”

He cited Spradlin and Rivera for hitting.
