Local Roundup: Aberdeen’s effort not quite enough to beat W.F. West

Execution with runners on base proved to be the difference in Aberdeen’s 8-2 loss to W.F. West on Tuesday at Ken Waite Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (8-7 overall, 4-5 2A Evergreen) and Bearcats (10-3, 7-2) were locked in a scoreless pitchers dual early on as Aberdeen starter Hunter Eisele and W.F. West pitcher Hunter Lutman stymied opposing batters over the first three innings.

Down 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Aberdeen loaded the bases on an Eisele walk, Kyle Miller getting hit by a pitch and a Bubba Jones bunt single, giving the Cats a prime scoring opportunity with no outs.

Marcus Hale stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to second to score Eisele to tie up the game. Jones was called out at second on the the play while Hale was originally deemed safe at first before the umpires got together to reverse the call, leaving Aberdeen with a runner on third and two outs.

Lutman then struck out Cats catcher Charlie Ancich to end the inning and limit the damage to just one run.

By contrast, W.F. West loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame and made sure to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Bearcats scored four runs off Eisele in the inning on a hit batter, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a squeeze bunt by Braden Jones.

W.F. West added three more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Lane Sahlin’s triple and run scored on an error to leadoff the frame.

Aberdeen loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and scored when Eisele forced in Trevon Ramos with a walk.

W.F. West reliever Waylen Land got Miller to ground out to end the game.

Aberdeen sits a half game behind Rochester in fifth place in the 2A Evergreen League, one game behind third-place Shelton.

The Bobcats play W.F. West at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hoquiam 14, Eatonville 13

Hoquiam held off a late rally to defeat Eatonville 14-13 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (3-11, 1-9 1A Evergreen) picked up their first league win of the season by scoring eight runs in the fourth through sixth innings.

Hoquiam took a 14-9 lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Zander Jump two-run double.

Eatonville (2-11, 1-8) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on base when Grizzlies reliever Joey Bozich struck out Brody Thirtyacre to end the game.

Bozich picked up the win, allowing six earned runs on four hits and five walks with two strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Jake Templer started for Hoquiam and allowed seven runs – four earned – on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work.

Jump went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and four RBI to lead Hoquiam.

Hoquiam failed to hold an early lead en route to a 14-8 loss to Eatonville in the nightcap.

The Grizzlies led 7-5 after three innings but managed to score just one run over the final four innings.

Meanwhile, the Cruisers continued to score against Grizzly pitching, taking a 8-7 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth and putting the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Three Hoquiam errors led to six unearned runs allowed in the game.

Joey Bozich led Hoquiam at the plate with two hits.

The Grizzlies face Tenino at 3 p.m. on Friday in Tenino.

Elma couldn’t dig out of an ever-increasing hole in an 8-4 loss to Tenino in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Tenino.

Elma (8-5, 4-3 1A Evergreen) trailed 8-1 after Tenino (14-2, 7-1) scored a pair of runs in each of the first four innings.

The Eagles managed a run in the top of the second on a Carter Studer single, a run in the fifth on a Blake Corr fielder’s choice ground out and two runs in the sixth on a Studer two-run home run to right field.

In addition to Studer’s solid day at the dish, Ethan Camus went a perfect 3-for-3 for the Eagles.

Gibson Cain took the loss for Elma, allowing six earned runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in three innings pitched.

Cameron Green allowed two runs – one earned – on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in three innings of relief for Elma.

Elma’s bats fell silent in a 7-3 loss to Tenino in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when TJ Dunlap scored on a passed ball followed by Jack Alexander crossing the plate on an error.

But the Beavers scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take control of the game.

Elma outfielder Eastin Wright belted a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but that was all the runs the Tenino pitching staff would surrender as Elma managed just two hits in the game.

The Eagles sit in third place in the 1A Evergreen League, 2.5 games behind Tenino.

Elma hosts Montesano at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley couldn’t muster up enough offense in a 4-1 loss to Ilwaco in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Pe Ell.

The Titans (10-4, 4-1 2B Pacific) trailed 3-0 in the league contest after Ilwaco (10-2, 7-0) scored three runs in the top of the second, bolstered by two PWV errors and two hit batsmen.

PWV scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Riley Pearson crossed the plate on Ilwaco’s only error of the game.

Garrett Keeton took the hard-luck loss for the Titans, allowing four runs – one earned – on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts over six innings pitched.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley picked up a non-league victory with a 13-8 win over Ilwaco in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Pe Ell.

PWV trailed 2-1 in the top of the third before scoring six runs on five hits, two hit batters, a walk and an error. Brayden Ruddell and Derek Fluke drove in runs with singles in the inning and Garrett Keeton recorded a triple to get the rally started for the Titans.

PWV added three in the fourth without a base hit as Ilwaco pitching surrendered three walks and hit a batter while the Fishermen defense committed one error and a passed ball to score a run.

The Titans made it 13-6 in the top of the sixth, capped by a Garrett Keeton line drive, two-run double to center field.

Riley Pearson picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings pitched.

PWV sits in third place in the 2B Pacific League, one game behind Forks.

The Titans host North Beach for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Monday.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley rallied late to earn a 7-4 victory over Ilwaco in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Pe Ell.

The Titans (9-3, 6-2 2B Pacific) trailed 4-0 before rallying for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.

Another run in the bottom of the sixth gave PWV starting pitcher Lauren Emery more than enough run support. Emery closed out the game, picking up the victory by allowing four runs on three hits with 13 strikeouts over seven innings pitched.

All four runs Emery allowed were unearned as the Titans committed five errors in the game.

Lauren Matlock was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored for the Titans.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s offense was unstoppable in a 21-1 four-inning victory in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday in Pe Ell.

PWV scored 10 runs in the second and third innings combined and put the game in mercy-rule territory with 11 runs in the top of the fourth.

Lauren Matlock, Grace Hodel, Sophia Milanowski and CJ Sipp each had three hits in the game and combined to score 11 runs with 10 RBI.

Lauren Emery picked up the win, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout in three innings of work.

PWV plays at Hoquiam at 4 p.m. on Friday.
