Lake Quinault Fishing Derby slated for May 29

The Quinault Indian Nation is bringing back the Lake Quinault Fishing Derby on May 29.

Prizes will be awarded, including $1,500 for the largest cutthroat trout and $500 for the biggest Dolly Varden, and there’s special prizes for kids, including $500 for the one age 12 and younger who catches the biggest cutthroat trout.

To qualify for prizes you must hold a derby ticket, which can be purchased for $25 at Amanda Park Mercantile and Rain Forest Resort prior to the event. Fishing will start at 6 a.m. and all fish must be checked in at the Lake Quinault School in Amanda Park by 2 p.m.

Adult prizes include a $1,500 grand prize for the largest cutthroat trout; there’s a $500 prize for the second-place cutthroat, and $200 for the third largest. The largest Dolly Varden will earn the angler who catches it $500; the second place Dolly Varden will earn the angler a 50-pound thrust trolling motor, the third largest a fishing gear combo.

For the kids 12 and younger, a bicycle is the prize for the largest cutthroat trout. Second and third place entries earn a fishing gear combo. Prizes will also be awarded for the fourth- and fifth-place fish in each category.
