PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Local teams compete at Central League Preview

Cross country teams from Raymond, South Bend and Willapa Valley high schools competed in the 2B Central League Preview meet on Thursday at Rainier High School.

Willapa Valley’s Jasmine Solso and Raymond’s Genevieve Sarich were the top local placers in the 5,000 meter varsity races. Solso placed seventh with a time of 25:21.02 with Sarich coming in eighth with a time of 25:49.04 in the girls race.

Willapa Valley’s Kaitlyn Ganzel crossed the finish line in 28:20.27 to place 13th in the girls race.

“Unbelievably proud of how the girls ran, improving despite running on no rest,” Raymond, South Bend and Willapa Valley head coach Brad Donovan said. “This was huge they got in there and competed hard. Solso and Sarich really ground it out and ran superior races. Kaitlyn looked strong and ran the hills like a beast to get her second fastest time ever.”

Rainier took the top four spots to win the team competition.

In the boys race, South Bend’s Justin Yi placed 31st in the field of 53 with a time of 23:42.38.

Willapa Valley’s Jack Ganzel (26:28.53) and Cody Crawford (26:00.18) placed 38th and 39th, respectively.

Raymond’s Neal Heckman (30:48.61) and Ethan Worlton (33:15.31) took 48th and 49th, respectively.

“The boys ran tough,” Donovan said. “Yi is in his first year of cross country and, after only two races, is getting a feel for the distance. Jack ran a super race and overcame a little contact with another runner that caused him to fall, and Crawford was right on his heels. Heckman and Worlton ran strong and improved their times.”

Onalaska placed first with 45 points, followed by Mossyrock (51) and Adna (87) in second and third-place, respectively.
