Chokers drop twin bills to Walla Walla, Big Bend; drop to 2-10 on season

Grays Harbor College’s baseball team struggled against its two opponents over the weekend, falling to Walla Walla and Big Bend in doubleheaders.

Walla Walla 18, Grays Harbor 5

Grays Harbor College opened its four-game weekend set with an 18-5 loss to Walla Walla on Saturday in Moses Lake.

The Chokers (2-10 overall) struggled on the bump as six GHC pitchers allowed 18 run – seven earned – on 13 hits and five walks.

GHC trailed 9-0 before capitalizing on Warriors’ defensive mistakes to score four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

But the Chokers bats were held quiet over the next four scoreless innings and managed just three singles in the game.

Walla Walla 5, Grays Harbor 4

Grays Harbor allowed three runs in the top of the ninth en route to a 5-4 loss Walla Walla in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday.

GHC led 4-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning, but a Walla Walla run cut the Chokers lead to two runs before the GHC pitching staff was unable to hold the save, allowing three runs in the top of the ninth.

For the second game in a row, Grays Harbor’s offense had its troubles with just two base hits, both doubles by Tony Dejesus and Derek Homer.

GHC’s Diego Morfin started on the mound, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Former Montesano standout Skylar Bove followed, allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings of work.

Mark Otto took the loss for GHC, giving up on earned run on two walks and one hit with a strikeout in 1-3 innings pitched.

Big Bend 10, Grays Harbor 0

Big Bend scored seven runs over the final three innings to hand Grays Harbor a 10-0 seven-inning defeat in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday in Moses Lake.

The Chokers were down 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning as starting pitcher Matthew Alexander allowed three earned runs on eight hits and three walks with a strikeout over four innings of work.

But Harbor relievers Maxwell Miles (0.2 IP, 4R, 4ER, 3BB) and Orion Pate (1.2 IP, 3R, 3ER, 5H, 5BB, 2K) combined to allow seven earned runs on six hits and eight walks over the final three innings of the game to secure the Chokers’ fate.

The GHC offense had less than three hits for the third consecutive game over the weekend, with a single by former Montesano standout Kaleb Ames and a double by outfielder Kobe Frazier being the only Choker hits in the game.

Big Bend 13, Grays Harbor 3

Grays Harbor closed out its weekend with a 13-3 loss to Big Bend in the second game of a twin bill on Sunday.

GHC cut into Big Bend’s early 2-0 lead when third baseman Kayden Scaparo singled to drive in outfielder Kobe Frazier in the top of the second inning.

But Chokers starting pitcher Jacob Williams ran into trouble in the bottom of the frame, allowing six runs – four earned – on four hits, two walks and two errors by the GHC defense to trail 8-1.

GHC added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth when center fielder Kaleb Ames scored on an error followed by left fielder Will Scharf crossing the plate on a single by first baseman Diego Morfin.

Big Bend completed the run-rule victory with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, capped by an RBI single off the bat of second baseman Ricardo Leon Guerrero II.

The Chokers offense had its highest hit output of the weekend with seven hits, led by infielder Derek Homer and Frazier with two hits apiece.

GHC has a four-game series at Everett College starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
