The ocean salmon fishing season will end at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday in marine areas 1 and 2 — meaning Ilwaco and Westport — according to a release from the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The season would have ended even sooner had the state and commercial troll fishermen not worked out a quota transfer from the commercial fishery to the recreational fishery last week. Washington Trollers Association President Greg Mueller said his group transferred more than a thousand fish from its coho quota because they are close friends with the charter boat captains in the area and wanted them to be able to fish as long as possible.
All salmon will be off-limits in both marine areas at the end of the day Tuesday. Recreational salmon fishing continues to the north of the Queets River in marine areas 3 and 4 — La Push and Neah Bay — and the Buoy 10 fishery at the mouth of the Columbia River remains open.
