Rollover chip truck wreck east of Aberdeen cuts power to 1,800, closes eastbound US12

A chip truck driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel on Highway 12 near Aberdeen Junction early Wednesday morning, taking out power lines and cutting power to 1,800 PUD customers.

The State Patrol reports that a 31-year-old Napavine man was eastbound at mile post 2.5, just east of Copland Road, when he fell asleep around 3:22 a.m. The 1998 chip truck left the roadway, struck and guardrail and power pole and came to rest on its side..

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The State Patrol report said the man will be cited for second degree negligent driving.

As of 5:48 a.m., Grays Harbor PUD reported it had made the necessary switching adjustments to restore power back to more than 1,300 customers, but 465 customers remained without power in west Central Park, north Aberdeen, Wishkah and Bench Drive. The PUD announced at noon that those customers remained without power and repairs were underway to replace the downed lines and severed power pole.

The right lane was initially blocked for vehicle recovery and power line repair, according to the State Patrol, and the roadway was closed around 9 a.m. for vehicle recovery. Crews were still working on removing the rig at noon, and according to the Aberdeen Police Department, the roadway was still blocked at that time. The Department of Transportation was detouring traffic through south Aberdeen up the Cosi Hill and onto State Route 107 to Montesano, through single lane construction closures near the top of Cosi Hill and at the south Montesano bridge.
