OS publisher starts poetry society

Duck Lake Books is instituting a monthly gathering of “spoken word artists” in Ocean Shores.

The nonprofit literary publisher is operated by Ed and Mary Parris, who will be hosting what they call the Lighthouse Poetry Society of Ocean Shores.

“The name comes not only from the location of the event, but from the metaphor it creates,” Ed Parris said in a release. “A lighthouse shines its beacon into the dark, lonely sea to guide weary travelers to shore. Likewise, a poem is a beacon sent out to guide its audience to new shores, new ways of viewing the world, new art for which the soul hungers.”

The first event will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the sunroom of the Lighthouse, 850 Pt. Brown Ave. The plan is for the gatherings to continue on the second Saturday of each month thereafter.

“Poetry is our focus, but we are open to all: poets, writers, singer/song writers, musicians, comedians, and just folks who want to sit and listen,” said Parris.
