Multiple small brush fires break out in East County

All fires in the area were 100 percent contained

The Grays Harbor fire districts covering East County were busy on Monday and early Tuesday as wind and hot weather conditions led to multiple small brush fires in the area.

A total of six fires and a power outage were reported in the Montesano and Elma areas early this week after the National Weather Service issued a red-flag fire warning for western Washington on Sunday.

The busiest area on Monday and Tuesday was near Elma. Fire District 5, which covers Porter, Elma and Satsop, battled four small brush fires in the area earlier in the week.

As of Tuesday afternoon, all fires in the area were 100 percent contained and there were no reports of any structural damage or injuries related to the fires.

On Monday, a downed power line caused an approximate 20- by 50-foot brush fire in the 4700 block of State Route 12. The fire was fully contained at 3:39 p.m., according to Grays Harbor Fire District 5 Chief Adam Fulbright.

A second fire on Monday broke out in a field at the 100 block of Bush Creek Road. The cause of the fire was a blown transformer and the fire was contained at 4:28 p.m.

Monday also saw a fire in the 200 block of Williams Creek Road in which Fire District 5 assisted Fire District 1 (Oakville) to battle the blaze. The fire was extinguished at 4:44 p.m.

In the early morning hours on Tuesday, FD 5 responded to a 30- by 40-foot grass fire near South Union Road and Heise Road. The fire was extinguished at 5:17 a.m.

According to Fulbright, the department investigated eight reports of possible fires in the area on Monday, with half of those turning out to be smoke from fires in the eastern part of the state or false alarms.

“I think the fire danger needs to be considered high,” Fulbright said, adding he would rather have people err on the side of caution and call in possible reports of fires than not. “Wind gusts are at 10-19 miles per hour. Fuels are already dry. … We have high temperatures throughout the week and we are not sure when wind conditions and patterns may change. So I think for the rest of this week we need to treat everything as a high fire danger. Especially now with the way the wind is and it has a tendency to drive the fire and spread more rapidly. That puts people and structures at a greater risk.”

Fire District 2, which covers Central Park, Montesano, Brady and Wynochee, reported two fires and a power outage in its coverage area this week.

A 30- by 30-foot brush fire in the 1100 block of Wynochee Valley Road was extinguished at approximately 5 p.m. on Monday.

A downed tree took out a power line and caused a power outage on Monday (no further information available) and on Tuesday a small 5×5 grass fire on Alder Grove Drive was extinguished at 9:50 a.m.

The smoke in the area caused the air quality monitor on Division Street in Aberdeen to report unhealthy air conditions from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday. But by noon on Tuesday the air quality in the area was reported as good by the monitoring station.
