Meeting Thursday for Timberworks flood relief plan

Public welcome to share thoughts about the plan, get an update on the project

A community open house regarding future plans for a cooperative Aberdeen-Hoquiam flood control project is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Grays Harbor PUD Dennis Nichols Building, 220 Myrtle St. in Hoquiam. The public is welcome to share ideas about flood-improvement plan — known as Timberworks — and get an update as to the status of the Fry Creek Flood Reduction and Restoration Project.

A partial design plan for the proposed North Shore levee that would provide flood protection in Aberdeen and Hoquiam was submitted to FEMA last week. FEMA has 90 days to study the plan and, if it approves of the plan, will adjust its flood maps, removing some 2,700 properties from the federal flood insurance requirement.

The cities of Aberdeen and Hoquiam are cooperating on the project. When completed, the levee will be just under six miles long, stretching from the east bank of the Hoquiam River on the west to the west bank of the Wishkah River on the east and bordered on the south by the Chehalis River. The cost of construction has not been calculated. The $1 million levee design and permitting process is being funded by a grant from the Chehalis Basin Flood Authority.
