HPD arrests registered sex offender

A 27-year old Thurston County man wanted for failing to register as a sex offender, crashed a stolen motorcycle on early Thursday morning, April 28, while driving down Bay Avenue in Hoquiam.

The man, who crashed into a fence near Bay Avenue and 28th Street, continued to run on foot from Hoquiam Police Department officers before he was found crouched and hiding behind a parked vehicle in a nearby alley, according to a statement by Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers.

The man was on Hoquiam police radar at 1:32 a.m., Thursday, because they found Aberdeen Police Department officers had previously tried to stop the man, who headed west into Hoquiam.

Currently, Washington State has a law prohibiting vehicular pursuits, so the APD officer was not able to chase the motorcyclist, according to Myers’ statement.

A few minutes later, the man was caught.

A resident, who lives near the fence that absorbed the crashing motorcycle’s impact, told HPD the man had taken off running toward an alley as police were approaching the crash scene, Myers said.

When Hoquiam officers found the man he admitted to being injured in the crash. He also had an injury to one of his hands.

After paramedics attended to the man’s wound, police found what would put him in more trouble — the motorcycle had been reported stolen from Seattle in August 2021; the license plate on the motorcycle was switched from another motorcycle; the man also has a felony warrant from Jefferson County for failing to register as a sex offender, and was wanted on a felony probation violation from the Washington State Department of Corrections.

In addition to all of that, a backpack — carrying methamphetamine, digital scales, a pipe, and a cellphone — were found at the crash scene, the statement reads.

The man was sent by Hoquiam paramedics to Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries. If he’s cleared, he’ll be arrested on his felony DOC warrant.

On Thursday, the Hoquiam Police Department was in the process of submitting new felony charges to Hoquiam Municipal Court for possession of a stolen vehicle, and several traffic offenses, including hit-and-run, and driving while his license is suspended or revoked in the second degree.
