A laser light show will light up Gable Park in Hoquiam June 4, the same night as the Hoquiam High School graduation.

“Last weekend was Hoquiam’s 131st birthday and we had to cancel the birthday party we had planned at Olympic Stadium,” Hoquiam Mayor Ben Winkelman told the City Council Monday night. “That being said, there is a replacement, you might say, something else we came up with, a laser light show at Gable Park and the high school that will occur on graduation night.”

It will be similar to the event held at the same location last Halloween.

“It’s open to the public at no cost and will include about an hour and a half of music leading to a video and laser show that will kind of hit its high point right around sunset,” said Winkelman.

The park is adjacent to the high school, off Emerson Avenue on the west edge of Hoquiam. Social distancing will be practiced and masks are required. Winkelman said there is ample room to spread out between the park and the Sea Breeze Oval track, and participants will have the option of remaining in their cars in the park parking lot to enjoy the show.

Hoquiam High School is currently planning to hold a graduation ceremony at Olympic Stadium at 6:30 p.m. June 4.

Spray Park

With hot weather on the way, the city of Hoquiam is looking at what it will take to reopen the spray park at Art Pocklington Central Play Park.

“We’ve been talking about opening up the spray park. It usually opens after (Memorial Day) weekend,” said Winkelman. “There may be some signage requirements or some rules we have to comply with, we’re working with the Parks Department and health department to try to figure out what the guidelines are for opening up the spray park. Hopefully, we’ll see that open up some time soon.”

The spray park apparatus was installed in 2013 at the corner of Emerson Avenue and Lincoln Street.
