High water possible throughout Thanksgiving and weekend

Landslides a concern in some places

With severe weather forecast for Thanksgiving, the National Weather Service in Seattle has issued multiple warnings for flooding in Grays Harbor County. This includes a flood watch for the entire county through 4 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, and a flood warning for the Satsop River that was issued Wednesday morning when it reached flood stage of 34 feet at 3 a.m.

The Grays Harbor County road crew has also closed Blue Slough Road, which connects Cosmopolis with Highway 107 until further notice due to roadway issues.

“All areas of the county will be susceptible to pooling of water on the already saturated ground, from the heavy rain we have received,” said Charles Wallace, Deputy Director of Grays Harbor County Emergency Management in an advisory email. “Rain will ease today, increase tonight and then impact Thanksgiving Day with showers. Small creeks may overflow their banks and roadways may have significant ponding as a result of heavy rainfall.”

Finally, a special weather statement has been issued for increased risk of landslides in the area due to saturation of the ground from rain. Wallace said this will continue to be a risk over the weekend with more rain forecast through Sunday.
