Food Ball 2016 kicks off Friday, marking the start of 11 days of spirited, yet friendly, competition to see which high school, Aberdeen or Hoquiam (the reigning champ), can collect the most cash and nonperishable food items for local food banks.
The schedules have been set by both squads. Here are some of the highlights for each.
Friday, Nov. 4: Hoquiam will be canvassing up and down Karr Avenue and Eklund starting at 4 p.m.; doing a takeover of Franco’s Taqueria from 4-7 p.m.; and working the Safeway from 3-10 p.m. Aberdeen will hold their Friday Food Ball Extravaganza at the school from 5-8 p.m. and will be canvassing Walmart, Bi-Mart, Ross and Swanson’s starting at 3 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 5: Aberdeen’s Downtown Takeover at Pizza Hut, CaKecaKes Tap Room and PNW Printworks and more from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a Denny’s takeover at 6 p.m. followed by Rock ‘n Bowl at the Rainier Lanes at 9 p.m.; and canvassing all day. For Hoquiam it’s the Amazing Race at 10 a.m. at the school and canvassing at Walmart 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 6: Hoquiam has a Food Ball luncheon at the school 1-3 p.m.; Domino’s takeover 4-7 p.m.; and Safeway canvassing 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aberdeen counters with door-to-door canvassing all over town starting at 10 a.m. at the school and more canvassing at area businesses.
Monday, Nov. 7: Aberdeen holds their McTakeover at McDonalds 5-8 p.m. with canvassing starting at 3 p.m. Hoquiam has their Casa Mia dinner and auction at the school student center starting at 6 p.m. with Seahawks on the big screen and Walmart canvassing 3-10 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 8: Hoquiam has their McTakeover from 5-8 p.m. and canvassing Safeway 3-8 p.m. Aberdeen has Muscle Beach Volleyball at Sam Benn Gym 5-8 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 9: Aberdeen takes over the Mazatlan from 5-8 p.m.; Hoquiam has their Hunger Games Community Energy Ball tournament at the school gym.
Thursday, Nov. 10: Hoquiam takes over the Grizzly Den 3-7 p.m. Aberdeen has their community dodgeball event at 5 p.m. at Sam Benn Gym.
Friday, Nov. 11: No events in honor of Veteran’s Day, but students will be out canvassing all over both towns most of the day.
Saturday, Nov. 12: Aberdeen has their field day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and has a dinner and a movie – spaghetti and “The Sound of Music” – at 7 p.m., followed by a student dance at 9 p.m. Hoquiam has their talent show at the school’s Little Theater at 7 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 13: Both teams spend the entire day canvassing in preparation for,
Monday, Nov. 14: The big weigh-in at the Grays Harbor PUD building at 5 p.m.
