Kids age 14 and younger can get a jump on the trout fishing season at the Grays Harbor Poggie Club’s trout derby April 15 at Failor Lake.
The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is opening the lake from 8 a.m. to noon for the derby. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m., the derby starts at 8 a.m. All fish must be weighed or in line to be weighed by 11 a.m. to qualify for derby prizes.
The event is free and includes hot cocoa, coffee, pastries and hot dogs. Various prizes will be awarded, including a new bike for first place in each of the three age groups.
Bowers Lake, also known as Vance Creek Pond #1, will be open April 1-9 to anglers age 14 and younger, seniors age 70 and older, and anglers with Department of Fish and Wildlife disability status and have a designated harvester card only.
The lake will be open to these anglers only through April 9. It will reopen April 22. State fish managers remind anglers that Lake Inez, also known as Vance Creek Pond #2, west of Bowers Lake will remain closed until the regularly scheduled lowland trout opener April 22.
