Aberdeen High student to attend Law and CSI forum in Washington, D.C.

Aberdeen High School junior Zoe Filan will take part in a law and crime scene investigation program this summer in Washington D.C., and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

NYLF: Law & CSI and Investigate and Explore: The CSI Experience is one of the Envision by WorldStrides family of programs (envisionexperience.com) that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.

“She will get to tour the Secret Service and do many other activities while there and received her invitation to attend based on PSAT scores, academic accomplishments and leadership activities,” said Filan’s mom, Kari Velzke. “She was to go last year, but delayed for a year due to COVID.”

Filan was invited to attend the invitation-only forum based on her PSAT scores and leadership activities. In addition to being involved in the Aberdeen Police Explorer program for two years, she has participated in Shop with a Cop and COVID-19 vaccine clinic volunteer works.

Filan is a varsity letter winner in girls basketball, and has been in the Automotive Technology program at Aberdeen High School for the past two years. She was also first chair violin at Aberdeen High School Orchestra and won the Orchestra Most Improved Award two years in a row and participated in the orchestra trip to Canada in 2019 that inspired her to get her electric violin.

She also took her first 3-credit college Biology course with travel to Alaska in 2019. She has long term goals of going to a four year university to study Forensics and Criminal Justice.

“As an alumna of Envision myself, I am excited for Zoe Filan to meet, work, and collaborate with other high-aspiring students from across the country and the globe,” said Amanda Freitag Thomas, Senior Vice President for Envision.

“Hands down, my favorite part of attending an Envision program was being with motivated students in an environment designed to help us challenge our assumptions, meet new people, and grow. Creating that same learning environment is a central focus for all of our programs.”
