Dear Journal: When the world seems big, try thinking small

Editor’s note: Karen Harris Tully is a writer who lives in Raymond and has agreed to keep a journal to share with Daily World readers during the odd and uncertain time we’re all navigating

I don’t know what’s going on in the news today. I haven’t turned on the TV, or looked at social media, my email, or a newspaper and … it feels really nice. Like the possibilities for today are wide open. I should do this more often. I’m writing this journal entry without being informed of what I “should” be thinking about.

So, what do we do today, after my writing and the kids’ assigned homework? I’m tempted to look at my phone for the weather, but I’m going to wait. Art, I think, or baking. I’ve been trying to come up with small acts of kindness to do with the kids. Things to give back to our community in some small way on a daily or weekly basis.

Rock (or shell) painting is something fun and easy the kids and I can do together, and haven’t in a long time. We’ll hide each painted rock, take a picture of its location and post that on Facebook, on the Pacific County Rocks or Harbor Rocks pages. People find the rocks and hide them again. It’s fun for all ages, and it’ll get us out and about.

I’ve also started a sourdough starter. It’s science, people! My new pet is (hopefully) catching yeasts on the kitchen counter as we speak. I’m crossing my fingers because I’ve never made sourdough, found the recipe on line of course, using pineapple juice! It’s supposed to be easier on blood sugars and easier to digest for gluten sensitive folks, so I thought I’d give it a try. Plus, yummy bread presents for everyone! The sourdough starter contains the yeast required for baking, in case you’re having trouble finding those pesky yeast packets in the store these days like I am.

So, besides the things we have to do, some small act of kindness is on our plate for today. This is doable. I’m starting today on a positive note.

Song of the day: Lovely Day, Bill Withers
