A song that will help

I recently received a letter in the mail (junk mail) referring to the Covid-19 Pandemic as the “Pale Horse, Doomsday, Apocalypse and Armageddon.”

This reminded me of the early twentieth century radio show called “The War of the Worlds.” Many people upon hearing this broadcast were so overcome with fear and hopelessness that they found many ways to commit suicide, including jumping from buildings.

I began to think of how a message of hope could be sent to the world during these difficult times whereby we are overwhelmed with alarming and disturbing news all centered on this microscopic virus that is taking a massive number of lives.

My mind reflected on a song of long ago that most of us learned as children. This song promotes Love, Faith, Knowledge and Strength. We would all do well if we put the words of this song in our minds and hearts as we begin our day.

I have seen children of all ages sing this song and their faces radiate with smiles. Whether these children came from broken and alcoholic homes, this song provided love and hope into a cruel world they faced daily. I think of the many people who have hit rock bottom because of wrong choices; and we have all made them. It could be alcoholism or drug addiction that lands them in rehab to aid them in finding hope and a new beginning. I’m sure as they go through the 12 step program, they will remember this song I’m speaking of.

I see a soldier on a battlefield wounded and calling out for help as he awaits a medic to tend to his injuries. A chaplin may bring prayer and hope. But even in this painful moment, I’m sure the soldier would remember the words of this song.

Have you ever been to a church service in a nursing home? The residents who live there are often speech, hearing and vision impaired. Their bones may ache and it is probably not the place they want to be. Upon asking them to sing this childhood song, their whole countenance changes into the radiant smiles they had as children.

Have you figured out this song that has meant so much to the world? “Jesus loves me (Love), this I know (Faith) for the Bible tells me so (knowledge) little ones to him belong, they are weak but he is strong (Strength)”

There are so many things we can reflect upon in the message of this song. The words of Jesus to us were: “Peace be still” as he calmed the sea, “Have faith” to move that mountain before us, “Fear not for I am with you always” and “Be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.”

Remember, dearly beloved, that regardless of the challenges we are facing with this pandemic, that this too SHALL PASS. But the song “Jesus Loves Me” will never pass as it has stood the test of time and is remembered by young and old alike. Go ahead, give it a try. Start your day out singing this song from your heart and savor the words.

In Loving Memory of Viola Nolan, a praying Mother who ran her final race and won on November 4th, 2019.
