Prentice, who plays country covers and originals, is known for his stage presence and his ability to sound a bit like Johnny Cash. The North Beach Hyaks celebrated the memory of one of its former star student-athletes, Shelly Cox, with an honor ceremony that helped establish the Shelly Cox True Grit Award. Cox died at 17 in a tragic traffic accident in 1987. The award will be given annually to one boy and one girl who “demonstrate courage, resilience and determination in and out of the halls of North Beach, carrying forward the memory of Shelly and what it means to be a Hyak.”

The Roberts family — Carrie, Blain and Kim — work alongside their large group of employees in order to make Westport Winery Garden Resort one of the places to travel throughout Grays Harbor. Recently they saw the fruits of their labor show as they won the Excellence in Family Owned Business from the Association of Washington Business. While they’ve won many other awards the Roberts cherish, Kim said this one was “probably the biggest honor we’ve ever had.”

The current pump station’s spot, behind the east end of Swanson’s and the west end of the Hoquiam Police Department building, which a new pump station will replace starting in the spring, was “a horrible choice, 50 years ago or 70 years ago,” according to Hoquiam City Administrator Brian Shay. The new pump station will be more inland. It won’t hang over the Hoquiam River embankment. It will help the city with flooding on Levee Street in downtown Hoquiam.
