He’s got a fan in Brian Shay, Hoquiam’s city administrator. “I’ve known Leonard and worked with him and been close friends with him for a long time, so I’m certain he’ll do an awesome job.”

The nominations for each award, which the community votes on, then goes to GGHI’s approximate 300 members who vote on the winner. The nonprofit beat out YMCA of Grays Harbor, Grays Harbor Youth Works, and Coastal Community Action Program.

While the big check here doesn’t show it, DVC got $37,240 to date, combined donor sources. One survivor who bravely shared a story that will make anyone with an empathetic nature cry. Thankfully for her and her children, they’re out of that situation and are on the way to a life of peace, thanks to DVC.

Wells / The Daily World Aberdeen Cash Mob helped make Saturday the most successful sales day for Harbor Books — 2200 Simpson Ave., in Hoquiam — and its owners, Melinda Einander and her wife Kaide. The group was also able to help another small business, Solid Coffee — 1941 Riverside Ave., in Hoquiam. “Cash Mob is such a good (way) to see all the small places, either the ones you knew about or the ones you never knew were there,” said Stephanie Navarra, who was shopping with an exuberant and wandering toddler. “This is so cool. I hope more people come because this was a great turnout.”

Wells / The Daily World Many of the 100+ Harbor Women Who Care core members stand behind and alongside the winning organization from Tuesday’s event, Domestic Violence Center of Grays Harbor, which is poetic, because that’s what 100+ Harbor Women Who Care does. The group supports nonprofits around the Harbor who need help. As of Thursday afternoon, they have helped raise $108,135. They helped raise almost one-third of that on Tuesday at Hoquiam Elks Lodge 1082, which graciously supports the group with a large space for their now twice yearly events. The next event is scheduled for Oct. 8, at Hoquiam Elks Lodge.

There are 19 buildings throughout the city on the list. Co-owners Kelli Osborne and Molly Moody are “excited” to get the building on the list. While it won’t be open for about six months, they hope to open it sooner than that.
