Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Willapa Valley find success at Chehalis Activators track and field invitational

Several Twin Harbors athletes place in the top three of their respective events at the Chehalis Activators Invitational track and field meet Friday through Saturday at W.F. West High School.

In the large meet that featured both an elite “Classic” competition and an “Invitational” for both boys and girls teams, Aberdeen’s boys teams placed third overall with Hoquiam’s girls team taking fifth in the Classic competitions.

Aberdeen was paced by solid efforts from its sprinters.

Senior speedster Luke Niemi placed second in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints, running a personal-record time of 23.47 in the latter race.

Niemi also ran the anchor leg of Aberdeen’s 4×100 relay team, joining Micah Schroeder, Jeremy Sawyer and Brandon Newcomb to run a first-place time of 44.81.

Bobcat Isaac Garcia placed second in the 400 with a PR time of 53.20 and ran the first leg of Aberdeen’s 4×400 relay team, joining William Johnson, Caleb Schimelpfenig and Niemi in placing second with a time of 3:42.29.

Hoquiam placed 11th overall with 19 points, paced by senior Timmy Higgins’ second-place finishes in both the 800 and 1,600 meter races, earning personal-best times in both events.

Pe Ell placed in a tie for 13th with 16 points. The Trojans were led by Carter Phelps, who placed second in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

In the girls Classic competition, Hoquiam took fifth overall with 48.5 points.

The Grizzlies were led by standout junior distance runner Jane Roloff, who won two events at the meet. Roloff won the 1600 with a PR time of 5:30.06 – crossing the finish line more than seven seconds ahead of Orting’s Sandra Ling (5:37.69) – and took the top spot in the 3200 with a time of 12:26.82, more than a minute better than Tumwater’s Jesse Brumbaugh (13:38.40).

Hoquiam’s Sydney Gordon placed second in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 10.5 inches and the Grizzlies 4×100 relay team of Kali Lund, Reagan McElliott, Katlyn Brodhead and Chloe Kennedy placed second with a time of 53.08.
