What began as a truck convoy from Aberdeen to Elma to honor Jason Reed, who passed away in a tragic accident July 28, turned into a major event of community support for Reed’s friends and family. Reed was a truck driver, race driver, and helped in the pits for anyone that needed it.
Trucks, pickups, cars and motorcycles began showing up early Saturday morning at the Quigg’s shop in Aberdeen to set up for the convoy. Community members were told they could join the memorial convoy, and it grew to include over 160 vehicles before reaching the Grays Harbor Fairgrounds and raceway. The convoy exited the highway at Montesano — where onlookers stood on the Devonshire Road overpass — and took the Monte-Elma Road to the raceway.
Supporters stationed themselves along the route and residents came out of their homes to show their respect as the convoy passed. It was an emotional moment for many to see the outpouring of support for Reed and his family.
Photographer Melissa Embry knew Reed, and captured the feeling when she said, “This is very heartbreaking and heart wrenching, but seeing the community unite and honor [Jason] was heartwarming.”
On signs made to honor Reed that many vehicles had mounted for the convoy, it shows Reed, his race car, and a fitting epitaph for those that knew him: “Race in Paradise.”
