The North Beach Hyaks celebrated the memory of one of its former star student-athletes, Shelly Cox, with an honor ceremony that helped establish the Shelly Cox True Grit Award. Cox died at 17 in a tragic traffic accident in 1987. The award will be given annually to one boy and one girl who “demonstrate courage, resilience and determination in and out of the halls of North Beach, carrying forward the memory of Shelly and what it means to be a Hyak.”
