Young Montesano squad falls to experienced Stevenson in girls tennis

Otterstetter picks up Monte’s lone victory in 4-1 loss

A young Montesano team struggled against an experienced Stevenson squad in a 4-1 loss on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

Montesano’s lone win of the match came from Karissa Otterstetter, who won her singles match 7-5 and 6-2.

“She really brought her game up a level,” Montesano head coach Aaron Tubbs said of Otterstetter.

Aside from Otterstetter’s victory, Montesano picked up games wins from freshman Ruby Jones in a 6-2, 6-0 singles-match loss and the doubles pairings of Izzy and Margie Taylor (6-2, 6-1 loss) and Ainsley Barbo and Emily Kuntz (6-3, 6-0 loss).

Freshman Hannah Craig lost her singles match 6-0, 6-0.

Tubbs said despite the loss, his team gained valuable experience against a solid Stevenson squad.

“Our inexperience showed, but playing such a talented group showed us what we need to work on,” he said. “We got a tennis lesson today from a tough opponent. I have no doubt every one of our players is better after today.”

Montesano is scheduled to face Castle Rock at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
