Weekend Roundup: Roundtree, Vessey lead Aberdeen to victory at Decatur Invitational

Zoe Vessey and Kya Roundtree won their respective weight classes to lead Aberdeen to an overall team victory at the Decatur Inviational on Friday in Federal Way.

Vessey pinned Decatur’s Jaelyn Quintanilla at 1:15 of the championship match to win the 103-108 pound weight class.

Roundtree got an early pin against Auburn’s Ryan Truitt to win the 161-168 class in just 25 seconds.

Aberdeen got points up and down the roster, including four second-place and five third-place finishes, to score 261 points as a team.

Aberdeen’s Alondra Santibanez (83-99 pounds), Claire Mottinger (116-120), Ava Benn (124-126) and Peityn Munoz (126-131) each placed second with Micah Turpin (100-103), Aili Scott (114-117), Emmersyn Yakovich (114-117), Scotlyn Lecomte (141-145) and Aman Cheema (154-159) placed third in their respective weight classes.

Chief Sealth (146 points) placed second with Auburn (128), Hazen (126.5) and host Decatur (107) placing third through fifth, respectively.

Three Grizzlies reach podium at Takedowns & Tiara’s meet

Three Hoquiam Grizzlies made the medal stand at the Takedowns & Tiara’s meet on Saturday at Orting High School in Graham.

DeVona Sansaver led the way for Hoquiam, placing second in the 190-pound weight class after falling via pinfall at 1:32 in the title match against Spanaway Lake’s Jasmine Davis.

Grizzly grapplers Meribel Mazariego and Sarah Morgan placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 155-pound weight class.

Aberdeen places third at Wilfong Classic

Three Aberdeen wrestlers won their weight classes to lead the Bobcats to a third-place finish at the Wilfong Classic on Saturday at Puyallup High School in Puyallup.

Aberdeen’s Talatheon Warness (106 pounds), Michael Hatton (132) and Aiden Watkins (152) each placed first in their respective weight class as Aberdeen scored 204.5 points to place third overall and first among 2A-class teams.

Warness won the 106-pound title with a pinfall victory over Redmond’s Winson Wan just 24 seconds into the match.

Hatton cruised through his weight class, taking the 132-pound championship with a 13-3 major decision victory over Franklin Pierce’s Roman Hemmings.

Aiden Watkins stood atop the 152-pound class podium with a 13-0 major decision win over Redmond’s Aaryan Shah.

Kennedy Catholic (214 points) placed first with Bellarmine Prep (214) taking second, less than 10 points ahead of the Bobcats in third. Puyallup (182.5) and Tumwater (127.5) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 10-team field.

Monte’s Ekerson wins at Tiger Classic

Montesano wrestler Cole Ekerson placed first in his weight class at the Centralia Tigers Classic on Saturday at Centralia High School.

Ekerson defeated Olympia’s Brodie Jones via pinfall at 1:13 to win the boys 138-pound championship and lead the Bulldogs to a 10th-place finish with 60.5 points.

Montesano’s Sean Ryker (145 pounds) and Mateo Sanchez (182 pounds) each placed fourth overall in their respective weight classes.

In the girls competition, Montesano’s Samantha Darrin defeated Olympia’s Alexia Sloboda via fall (0:43) in a 163-167 pound matchup.

BOYS PREP SWIMMING

Aberdeen at Mark Morris Sprint Pentathlon

The Aberdeen boys swimming team kicked off its season with 17 other schools throughout Southwest Washington at the Mark Morris Sprint Pentathlon on Saturday afternoon in Longview.

Swimmers navigated two high school individual events, along with three 25-yard sprints, to accumulate individual points. Team standings were not kept.

Freshman Zeke Olson led the Bobcats with 31 points, with a sixth-place finish in the 25 freestyle and an eighth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Sophomore Jacob Hallak added 21 points and had Aberdeen’s best finish of the day with a fourth-place performance in the 500 freestyle. Hallak also took 11th in the 100 butterfly.

Sophomore Denny Linker added 13 points, seniors Zach Parker and Marcus Paniagua each posted 12 points and junior Austin Weiss finished with 11 points.

Paniagua and Weiss were seventh and eighth place in the 500 free to round out Aberdeen’s top-10 placers.

Weiss, along with Hallak, Olson and Tyson Powell, were cited by the coaches for their performances.

On Wednesday, Aberdeen will begin a two-home, dual-meet week by hosting Shelton at 4 p.m. at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.

On Friday, Kelso visits Aberdeen at 3:45 p.m.
