Weekend Roundup: Montesano shutout in district first-round loss to Columbia-White Salmon

Shots came too few and too far between for Montesano in a 1A District 4 Tournament opening-round loss to Columbia-White Salmon on Saturday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (11-5 overall) got just four shots in the game — all by freshman forward Felix Romero — as Montesano struggled to generate offense against the Bruins (8-5-1).

CWS took the lead in 24th minute when sophomore midfielder Lucas Miller made a move in the middle of the 18-yard box to open up room for a shot that beat Monte keeper Jayden McElravy as the Bulldogs fell into a 1-0 hole.

After the goal, the game was played mostly at the midfield, with neither team generating additional scoring chances in the first half.

The Bruins doubled their lead in the second half when freshman midfielder Andres Sanchez scored in the 53rd minute.

CWS then went into a defensive shell, making it difficult for Montesano to sustain any penetration into the Bruins defensive third and swarming Montesano attackers Mateo Sanchez and Romero to force the ball off their feet.

Elma 5, Winlock 0

Valencia Mendoza scored a natural hat trick to lead Elma to a 5-0 victory over Winlock in the first round of the 1A District 4 Tournament on Saturday at Shelton High School.

The Eagles (15-0-2) wasted no time taking the lead, scoring in the fourth minute when sophomore midfielder Cason Seaberg assisted on Mendoza’s first goal of the contest.

Later in the first half, Mendoza converted a feed from senior Canon Seaberg in the 22nd minute to put Elma up 2-0.

Mendoza then completed the natural hat trick with a goal off a Manny Hernandez throw-in in the 31st minute.

Eagles sophomore midfielder Jose Perez then scored off a corner kick just before the end of the first half to give Elma a comfortable 4-0 lead at the break.

Cason Seaberg scored off an assist from older brother Canon in the 43rd minute to give Elma the 5-0 victory.

“Very happy with the start to the game and our play,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “As the half finished, we had settled in to a good rhythm. Even though we only got the single goal in the second half, everyone played their part for the team and we didn’t give up much to them to get forward and get re-establish in the game.”

With the victory, Elma advances to the district semifinals against King’s Way Christian in a game set for 6 p.m. Tuesday in Elma.

A victory will earn the No. 4 Eagles a berth in the district championship game and state tournament.
