Chokers take three of four in Oregon

The Grays Harbor College baseball team took three of four games over the weekend against Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon.

Grays Harbor opened up Saturday’s double-header with a 4-1 win over Blue Mountain on Saturday in Pendleton, Oregon.

The Chokers (5-7 overall) scored its four runs on just two hits in the game, with former Montesano Bulldog Aaron Lano involved in every run for GHC.

The Chokers scratched across a run in the top of the third when scored on a bases-loaded walk to Nolan Baugher.

Lano then stepped up in the sixth inning and belted a double to score Cameron Denny and Alex Zang to put GHC up 3-0.

After the Timberwolves (1-9) scored a run on an Matthew Carlson eighth-inning double, the Chokers added an insurance run when Lano scored on BMC’s third error of the game in the top of the ninth.

Chokers ace Trevor Barth dazzled on the bump, allowing no runs on four hits with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Camden Ryan earned the save for GHC, allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts in two innings pitched.

A big four-run inning helped Grays Harbor sweeps Saturday’s twin bill with a 7-3 victory over Blue Mountain in the nightcap.

Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Grays Harbor scored four runs on an Aidan McMurdo walk, an Ian Winterhalder sacrifice fly, a pass ball and an error to take a lead it would never relinquish.

GHC would add to its lead with insurance runs in each of the following three innings of the game on RBI singles from Preston Vine, Chase Cleveringa and McMurdo.

BMC would score on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth to complete the scoring.

The Chokers offense smacked 14 hits in the game, lead by first baseman Nolan Baugher, who went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles.

Colin Hoover allowed a run in three innings of work to pick up the win.

Former Ocosta standout Colby Scheuber pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings, allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Grays Harbor lost the opener of a doubleheader in extra innings on Sunday, falling 9-8 to Blue Mountain in 10 innings in Pendleton, Oregon.

GHC led 8-7 after five innings of play but BMC tied the game with two outs in the top of the ninth on an error by GHC second baseman Reese Shioji, allowing Kaden Boyle to cross the plate and tie the game.

After GHC was held scoreless for the fifth-straight inning by the Timberwolves bullpen, BMC ended it when Matthew Carlson singled home Zach Walsh with the game-winning run.

Nolan Baugher (2-4, 2 RBI) and Preston Vine (1-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI) led the Chokers offense.

GHC reliever Camden Ryan took the loss, allowing an earned run and five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Grays Harbor’s offense drew 15 walks and the Chokers got a solid outing from staring pitcher Tyler Hopper en route to an 11-4 win over Blue Mountain in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Sunday in Pendleton, Oregon.

GHC scored its 11 runs on 10 hits and benefited from 15 walks by Timberwolves pitching, led by left fielder Aidan McMurdo and third baseman Reese Shioji, who drew three walks apiece.

Tied at 1-1 in the top of the third, GHC plated three runs on RBI singles from Chase Cleveringa and Shioji followed by an Aaron Lano sacrifice fly.

Two innings later, the Chokers would take a 6-2 lead on back-to-back bases loaded walks by Preston Vine and McMurdo and would go up by six runs with two unearned runs in the seventh.

GHC would score three times in the ninth on a McMurdo sac fly, an unearned run and an Lano RBI single.

Hopper allowed one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.

Chokers reliever Andrew Shanrock followed by allowing two runs in two innings pitched with former Elma standout Brody Rustemeyer allowing no runs and no hits with a strikeout in the ninth.
