Weekend Roundup: GHC women’s wrestling takes second at Spokane Open

SPOKANE — The Grays Harbor College men’s and women’s wrestling teams each cracked the top 9 at the Spokane Open at the Spokane Convention Center on Sunday.

The Choker women’s team finished second overall at the open with 61 1/2 points as a team. Simon Fraser won the women’s team title with 73 1/2 points.

GHC finished ninth as a team on the mens side with 72 1/2 points, just 1/2 point behind Warner Pacific College. Clackamas Community College won the mens team title.

The Chokers had three women win their respective bracket to help fuel the high team score. Chloe Spenced went 2-0 at 136 pounds to win her weight bracket, while Dellisha Hodges went 2-0 to top the 191-pound bracket. Kacie Moorhouse brought home an individual title for GHC at 170 with a 4-0 record for the day.

Kateri Rowell placed second at 109 pounds witha a 4-1 record, while Marizza Birrueta took third at 130 with a 3-2 record.

On the men’s side, the Chokers didn’t have anyone earn a medal, but Logan Sundheim and D.J. Morrow each earned an even 2-2 record for Sunday. GHC’s Haden Smith, Andy Gonzales, Dyel Eason and Max Lane each went 1-2 for the day.

The GHC men’s team will host Brigham Young University on Dec. 2, while the women’s team will travel to the Clansmen International in Burnaby, British Columbia on Dec. 3.

C.C. Women’s Basketball

Yakima Invitational

YAKIMA — The Grays Harbor College women’s basketball team opened its 2016-17 campaign in Yakima this past weekend, going 1-2 in the Yakima Valley Invitational.

On Sunday, the Chokers finished with an 86-59 loss to Tacoma, but got their first win of the season on Saturday with an 81-48 win over the Gonzaga club team. On Friday, GHC opened the tournament with a 92-74 loss to Treasure Valley.

Against the Titans, the Chokers had a tough time keeping a hold of the basketball with 24 turnovers. The Titans scored 24 points off GHC’s turnovers, which played a big part in the Tacoma win.

Alexia Thrower led GHC in scoring with 25 points and 12 rebounds, with Katie Brisbios adding 10 points. Aberdeen grad Makenna Roiko scored five points off the bench for Tacoma.

On Saturday, GHC scored its first win by taking advantage of its offensive talents to knock off Gonzaga club in a loser-out contest.

The Chokers drained seven 3-point baskets and converted 15 turnovers into 16 points to outpace the Bulldogs. Jaylin Brasher-Norwood led all scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds for the Chokers.

Thrower finished with another double-double, her first of the season at 17 points and 17 rebounds. Estelle Wilson also scored 17 points and swiped three steals for GHC.

GHC opened the tournament against Treasure Valley and was undone by the second and third — outscored 52-25 — by the Chukars.

Thrower led the Chokers with 22 points and Romey Begar scored 13 points. Bria Buchanan, in her only game of the weekend due to her playing in the NWAC Sophomore All-Star Volleyball games, pulled down 10 rebounds.

Today, GHC will travel to Shoreline for a non-NWAC Western Division contest.
