Cashmere 4, Montesano 2

It was a tale of two halves that didn’t end well for Montesano as the defending 1A District 4 champions fell 4-2 to Cashmere on Saturday in Cashmere.

Montesano (0-1 overall) opened the season in fine form, jumping out to a first-half lead when Mikayla Stanfield took an assist from Jaiden King and scored in the 12th minute.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead when Jaiden Morrison scored in the 29th minute.

But all the momentum Monte seized in the first half evaporated over the final 40 minutes.

Cashmere (1-0) scored four unanswered goals, led by Molly High’s two goals and Natalie Dart’s two assists.

Cashmere took the lead for good when senior Carley Diaz scored mid-way through the second half.

“We played really well in the first half, but obviously did not finish a full game,” said Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez, who added his team did not match Cashmere’s increased energy after the break. “We didn’t have the answers in the second half. After their first goal their intensity went up and we just couldn’t match it.”

Montesano will look for its first win of the season when the Bulldogs travel to Chehalis to take on WF West at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

WF West 4, Elma 1

The Elma Eagles opened the season with a 4-1 loss to WF West on Saturday at Davis Field in Elma.

A team made up of mostly sophomores and freshman, Elma (0-1 overall) fell behind 4-0 after WF West (1-0) scored twice in each half.

The Eagles broke the shutout when one of their three starting freshman — forward Beta Valentine — scored off her own rebound in the 78th minute.

Valentine, along with fellow starting freshmen midfielder Miley Seaberg and defender Amaya Lewis, were noted by Elma head coach Evan Valentine for keeping their composure in their first varsity game.

“I thought they didn’t let the moment overtake them,” he said. “I thought the whole team fought hard and never gave up.”

Elma will face another 2A class opponent when it faces Rochester at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Rochester.
