Wednesday Sports Roundup: South Bend outlasts North Beach in five sets

Indians edge Hyaks

SOUTH BEND — Jessica Sanchez had 26 kills and four blocks as South Bend outlasted North Beach, 20-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11, in a Pacific League finalé on Wednesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

South Bend’s Livvie Ogilvie played a key role in the back-and-forth match. Expanding her role to full-time setter due to an injury, she contributed 13 digs and five kills.

“I was pretty proud of our girls, I think they grew up a little bit,” South Bend coach Jackie Sanchez said. “We showed great composure and I was pretty proud of how well they stayed together.”

“North Beach is much improved, I was very impressed by them,” Sanchez added.

Karley Reidinger added 12 kills and three blocks, Katelyn Doyle 10 digs and Kenzy Boothe three kills for South Bend (3-5, 5-8).

The Tribe took the JV contest, 25-12, 25-15.

Both teams will advance to district competition beginning Saturday. South Bend will play a 10 a.m. match at Raymond against the Central League’s third-seeded entry.

North Beach (2-6, 4-9) will also open district Saturday, at the home of the Central League runner-up.

Wildcats fall in three

WESTPORT — Life Christian Academy completed an unbeaten regular season by turning back Ocosta, 25-8, 25-21, 25-18, in a Pacific League match Wednesday at Westport.

Ocosta (4-4, 9-5) gave the Eagles a stiff challenge in the final two sets, performing particularly well on defense.

“We played probably the best game we’ve played all year,” Wildcat coach Barbara Rasmus said. “They are a very good team.”

Ocosta’s Erika Snider served three aces to increase her single-season school record total to 61. She put all her serves into play and contributed six kills.

Kaylee Barnum delivered 10 kills and eight blocks, Alivia Marsh five blocks, Evalyn Marsh 10 digs and Emily Snider eight digs and five assists for the Wildcats.

Ocosta won the JV match, 26-24, 25-22.

The Wildcats open district competition Saturday at Life Christian, facing the fourth seed from the Central League at 10 a.m.

Gulls win in four

PUYALLUP — Raymond closed out its Pacific League season with a four-set win over Chief Leschi on Wednesday at Puyallup.

Scores and details were not reported. The league runners-up, the Gulls (7-1, 12-2) will host a district-opening contest Saturday.

FOOTBALL

Chitwhins 44, Comets 32

TAHOLAH — Taholah took control of the Coastal 1B League title race by downing Naselle in a battle of league unbeatens Wednesday night at Ben Charley Field.

The Chitwhins (3-0, 4-2) return to action Saturday, when they travel to Mary M. Knight.

Bobcats 146, CCR 37

CENTRALIA — Winning every event, Aberdeen closed out an unbeaten dual season by crushing the Centralia-Chehalis combine Tuesday at Centralia.

Annika Eisele won the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly and shared in a pair of relay victories for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen’s Katie Lewis, who won the 500 freestyle, lowered her personal-best time by some five seconds. Teammate Kenadi Bridges improved her PR by 10 seconds in the same event.

Aberdeen’s Riley Watson, with a 10-second personal best, met district qualifying standards in the 100 breaststroke.

The Bobcats will participate in the Evergreen 2A Conference/Subdistrict meet Friday at the River Ridge pool in Lacey.
