Bulldogs sweep
MONTESANO — Host Montesano swept Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A dual track meet Wednesday at Rottle Field.
The Bulldogs trounced the inexperienced Grizzly boys, 116-24. Monte’s girls also prevailed, 74-59.
Montesano’s Tanner Nicklas was a double winner in the boys shot put in discus. His 45-1 1/2 mark in the shot — which narrowly bested Hoquiam’s Caleb Larsen — represented a PR by three feet. Larsen’s 45-foot throw was also a PR.
Sam Winter captured both hurdles and the triple jump. Donovan Albert (200 and 400 meters) and Bryce Whipple (100 and javelin) were also two-time individual winners for the Bulldogs.
Alma Muro (sprints), Zoee Lisherness (hurdles) and Elizabeth Peterson (middle distances) were double winners for Monte’s girls.
Bulldog girls coach Doug Schupbach also cited the performances of Whipple (who was making his competitive debut), Gage Iverson and Madison Schupbach.
“We didn’t get wet and the kids had good performances with the field and running events,” Coach Schupbach said.
Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan cited Larsen, Sharaya Brydon, Alex Tomko and Taylor Strom for strong showings.
“I’m proud of the kids with how well they competed,” Pelan said. “We are young and inexperienced and it’s early in the year, but they competed.”

Grizzlies 14, Rockets 5
Jackson Folkers had three hits and Garrett Bradley homered as Hoquiam thumped Castle Rock in a non-league game Wednesday.
Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said he likes what he is seeing from his batters thus far.
“Overall, our hitting has been pretty good and we’re trying to hone in on who are our top four or five pitchers,” he said. “I see a great season ahead.
Jump cited Walker Dunn and Liam Odell for hitting and Logan Hurley for outfield play.
The Grizzlies (3-2-1) begin Evergreen 1A League play at Elma on Tuesday.

Bulldogs 4, Owls 1
MONTESANO — Matt Plato’s three-run homer proved the difference in Montesano’s win over Overlake on Wednesday.
Montesano head coach Mike Osgood said he liked Plato’s aggressive plate approach when he got ahead in the count in the third inning.
“He’s our big hitter,” Osgood said. “He knew his pitch was coming 2-0 and he took advantage of it,”
The Bulldogs played an errorless game behind winning pitcher Evan Bates. Osgood also pointed out the strong defensive effort from outfielders, Kobe Gallinger, Carson Klinger and Teegan Zillyett.
The Bulldogs (4-1) open league play at Forks on Tuesday.

ELMA — Elma scored solo runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull out a win over Napavine in non-league play Wednesday at Elma.
It took an extra inning of baseball but Elma came through with a dramatic extra innings victory against Napavine.
Carter Jacobson drove in two runs and Raiden Aho and Brady Shriver also had two hits each for the Eagles (3-3).
The Eagles survived eight errors, thanks in part to fine pitching from Brody Rustemeyer and Shriver.
“Our two pitchers threw outstanding,” Elma coach Jim Hill said. “We have to continue to get better on defense but I really applaud the kids for battling and hanging in there versus a quality(Class 2B) school.”
Hill also highlighted Jacobson, who had a solid game behind the plate.

Gulls swept
RAYMOND — Ilwaco spoiled Raymond’s Pacific 2B League debut by sweeping the Gulls, 14-3 and 9-6, on Wednesday at S.A. Anderson Field.
Raymond’s Jack Jordan went 5-for-7 at the plate for the day.
The Gulls walked 10 batters in the first game, but improved their play in the nightcap.
“I was much happier with our play in the second game,” Raymond coach Luke Abbott said. “There’s still some situational things that we need to work on and we need to learn how to string some hits together.”
The Gulls (0-2, 1-3) travel to North Beach on Tuesday.
SOFTBALL
Gulls sweep
RAYMOND — Unbeaten Raymond opened Pacific 2B League play by trouncing Ilwaco, 11-0 and 21-2, on Wednesday.
In addition to the strong plate appearances from players like Makenna Williams and Maddie Silvernail, the Gulls also got good pitching performances from Katie Doyle in the first game and eighth-grader Izzy Silvernail in the second game.
“I thought our pitching was really good,” Raymond coach Jason Koski said. “They came in and threw strikes.”
The Gulls were also aggressive on the bases, swiping 11 bases in the doubleheader. Hannah Miller had six of the stolen bases.
Raymond (2-0, 4-0) travels to North Beach for a doubleheader Tuesday.

NAPAVINE — A critical error on the infield in the sixth inning sunk Elma as the Eagles suffered their first loss Wednesday at the hands of Napavine.
Elma’s bats kept the Eagles afloat, as Kassedy Olson came through with three hits and Kali Rambo ended up with four RBIs. But early trouble finding the strike zone and a late defensive miscue was too much for Elma to overcome. Ada Williams homered for Napavine.
“Walks got to us to start with and we compounded it. We hgave a couple of walks and the girl came up and hit the home run,” said Elma head coach Roger Elliott . “We out-hit them but we need to cut down on the strikeouts too.”
The Eagles (6-1) visit Aberdeen on Friday.
