Wednesday Prep Roundup: Manny Hernandez’s hat trick leads Elma to win over Hoquiam

Elma’s soccer team remained undefeated with a win over Hoquiam as we review Wednesday’s prep sports games involving Twin Harbors teams.

BOYS SOCCER

Elma 9, Hoquiam 0

Elma junior forward Manny Hernandez’s hat trick led a host of Eagles goal scorers en route to a 9-0 victory over Hoquiam on Wednesday in Hoquiam.

Hernandez scored off a throw in from Canon Seaberg in the eighth minute, on a 45-degree cross from Seaberg in the 30th minute, and off an assist from Jace Poston in the 47th minute.

Hernandez was one of five Elma goal scorers on the evening. Senior forward Gavin Blakett scored twice for Elma, one on a takeaway in the 21st minute and a second goal off an assist from Abel Alatorre in the 64th minute.

Rodrigo Luna, Aiden Sayers-Hartman and Seaberg also scored for Elma (4-0 overall, 1A Evergreen), which led 5-0 at the half.

With the victory, Elma remains undefeated on the season and moves a half-game ahead of Forks for the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League.

The Eagles have yet to allow a goal this season and have outscored their opponents 32-0.

River Ridge 8, Aberdeen 2

Aberdeen fell to 1-3 on the season with an 8-2 loss to class 3A River Ridge on Wednesday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats fell behind 2-0 after giving up two early goals in the first half but responded with Miguel Martinez took a through ball from Carlos Mendoza and scored to cut the deficit to 2-1.

River Ridge scored once more to make it a 3-1 game at the half and scored the first five goals of the second half for an 8-1 lead.

Aberdeen scored on a goal in the waning moments of the game when Antonio Hernandez-Torres scored off a cross from Martinez to make it an 8-2 final score.

“I was very impressed with how hard our boys worked against an amazing team,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said, commending River Ridge for being “excellent in all aspects of the game.”

“They never backed down or quit.”

Aberdeen’s JV team lost 5-2 on Wednesday, with Julian Garcia and Ruben Oropeza scoring the goals for the Bobcats.

WF West 14, Aberdeen 2

Aberdeen had its three-game win streak snapped in a 14-2 loss to WF West on Wednesday in Chehalis.

The Bearcats scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings before putting up four runs in the third and sixth in the fourth to hand Aberdeen a five-inning, 10-run rule loss.

Aberdeen’s Aili Scott (1-3, R) and Katlynn Smith (1-3, R, RBI) had the Bobcats’ only two hits in the game off WF West pitcher Kamy Dacus.

Down 4-0 in the top of the third, Aberdeen (3-2) scored two runs on an RBI single from Smith to drive in Scott and on an error on a fly ball hit by Brooklynn Lecomte to score Smith.

Aberdeen pitcher Kayla Mullins took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing 11 earned runs on 12 hits with one strikeout and four walks in four innings pitched.

King’s Way Christian 11,

Elma 0

King’s Way Christian put up five runs in the first inning en route to handing Elma its first loss of the season 11-0 in six innings on Wednesday morning at Luke Jensen Sports Complex in Vancouver.

KWC smacked 11 hits of Elma pitching, leading to nine earned runs.

Elma (4-1) managed four hits in the game, led by a 2-for-2 day from Justin Elliott.

Cobey Moore took the loss for Elma, allowing five earned runs on five hits and three walks in an inning pitched.

Elma 19, Goldendale 7

Elma responded from a loss earlier in the morning to hammer 17 hits in a 19-7 win over Goldendale on Wednesday afternoon in Vancouver.

Elma scored five runs in the third inning — highlighted by a Brody Rustemeyer three-run inside-the-park home run — to break a 3-3 tie and put the Eagles up for good.

Elma scored four more runs in the top of the fourth inning capped by back-to-back RBI singles from Justin Elliott and Clay McBride.

Elma added a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and four more in the seventh to earn the win.

Elliott led the way for the Eagles offense, going 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and five RBI.

Caleb Knutson also had a solid game at the dish for Elma, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Brady Johnston (2-3, 2R, 2RBI), Rustemeyer (2-2, 3R-HR, 2R, 3RBI) and Blake Corr (2-5, 2R, RBI) also had multi-hit games for Elma.

Knutson picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on one hit with three strikeouts and a walk in two innings pitched.
