BOYS PREP GOLF
Montesano 178, Kalama 236
Montesano posted five sub-50 scores to defeat Kalama 178-236 on Tuesday at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.
Led by Josh Wills’ 43 and rounds of 44 apiece from Zander Jones and Trey Sweeney, a total of five Monte golfers shot under 50 for the first time this season.
Monte’s score of 178 was identical to last week’s score against Tenino, tying its season low.
Cole Sigler and Tristan Herring tied with scores of 47 for their 9-hole rounds to complete Monte’s team scoring (top four scores count toward team score).
Wills won Medalist honors for the second-consecutive meet after shooting a personal-best 39 on his birthday against Tenino a week ago.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to face Shelton at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alderbrook Golf and Yacht Club in Union.
Montesano (178) — Josh Wills 43, Zander Jones 44, Trey Sweeney 44, Cole Sigler 47 (tie), Tristan Herring 47 (tie).
Kalama (236) — Names/scores not available at the time of this writing.
Aberdeen 229, Centralia 235
It took a complete team effort for the Aberdeen Bobcats to defeat the Centralia Tigers 229-235 on Wednesday at the Riverside Golf Course in Centralia.
As the first three golfers for each team turned in their scorecards Centralia held a seven stroke-lead, bolstered by the play of brothers Cole and Von Wasson — the top two golfers in the 2A Evergreen Conference.
Cole won Medalist honors with a 2-under 34 and Von was two strokes off the pace at 1-over 36.
But Aberdeen’s depth proved to be too much for Centralia. Charlie Ancich (40) and Logan Seguin (41) led Aberdeen followed by Trevon Nichols (47) and Hunter Eisele (48).
Baylor Ainsworth and Luke Niemi tied with scores of 53 to give Aberdeen the victory (top five scores are recorded).
“It was a nail biter right down to the last golfer,” said Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom before commenting on the competitive respect between Aberdeen’s Seguin and Ancich and the Wasson brothers. “All four of them had a great time golfing together.”
Aberdeen (229) — Charlie Ancich 40, Logan Seguin 41, Trevon Nichols 47, Hunter Eisele 48, Baylor Ainsworth 53 (tie), Luke Niemi 53 (tie).
Centralia (235) — Cole Wasson 34, Von Wasson 36, Colby Christensen 52, Tucker Weaver 55, Brady Sprague 58.
GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Toledo 9, Ocosta 3
Playing the game without substitutes, Ocosta fell to Toledo 9-3 on Wednesday at Toledo High School.
Ocosta (3-3 overall) tied the game at 1-1 on a goal from senior defender Trinity White on a penalty kick.
The Riverhawks added three additional goals, including two in stoppage time while the Wildcats were down to 10 players, for a 4-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, White sent a long direct kick that Brizeyda Ayala Rios ran on to and converted for a weak-side goal.
Toledo (5-0) scored twice more before Ocosta’s Miki Ness took a through pass from Nevaeh Smith and bent the back of the netting to put the Wildcats down 6-3.
But Toledo would score three more times to secure the 9-3 victory.
“I was happy with the effort tonight. To score three goals against a strong team shows our potential,” said Ocosta head coach Mike King, who cited Ayala Rios, White, Natalie Carloza and Meghan Denny for their play. “The girls left it all out on the field tonight. They’re overcoming a lot of adversity with injuries and are gaining valuable experience.”
Ocosta 1 2 — 3
Toledo 4 5 — 9
