The defending 1A Evergreen League champions did not envision starting the season off like this.

Montesano scored two points in the first quarter and never fully recovered in a 48-29 loss to WF West to open the season on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs’ only bucket of the opening frame was a shot made by senior post player Paige Lisherness as Monte faced a 14-2 deficit heading into the second.

Monte’s offense continued its rut throughout the contest, scoring just nine points in the second quarter to trail by 13 at halftime and scored 18 points in the second half.

The Bulldogs managed to cut the Bearcats lead to eight points on a Maia Young 3-pointer with just seconds left in the third quarter, but WF West’s offense got hot to start the fourth, hitting six straight shots — including two 3-pointers — to push the lead to 44-23 with 5:25 left to go in the game.

“We just didn’t come out ready to play like I thought we would,” said Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield, citing too many missed shots and too many turnovers as contributing to the loss. “I’m dissapointed that our effort wasn’t quite what we thought it would be. … We didn’t really player our game.”

Junior guard Jaiden King led Monte with 11 points — nine in the second quarter — followed by Lisherness with eight, six on three straight baskets in the fourth quarter.

Junior forward McKynnlie Dalan scored seven points in her first varsity game since her freshman year after the standout suffered a back injury that kept her sidelined last season.

WF West was led by Drea Brumfield, who scored a game-best 23 points.

Hoquiam held on to down Willapa Valley 28-27 in a season-opening game for both teams on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

Willapa Valley rallied from down six entering the fourth quarter to crawl to within a point, but failed to convert as Hoquiam held off the Vikings despite scoring just two points in the fourth quarter.

“We had some opportunities, we just didn’t take care of it,” said Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson, who said he took the game against Hoquiam out of his respect to the Grizzlies head coach. “Somebody asked, ‘Why are you playing Hoquiam?’ I said ‘because Chad Allan is my friend.’”

Allan said he considered Peterson a “mentor” and the feeling was mutual.

“It was a really good matchup against a John Peterson-coached team. A tight, close match,” he said. “You love classy coaches. … They’re going to have their teams ready to battle. … John is one of my mentors and I really respect him. … It’s not about classification, it’s about the kids and playing a solidly-coached team to get better at basketball.”

The Seagulls (1-0) were locked in a close game until 3-pointers from Kyra Gardner and Kyndal Koski pushed Raymond’s lead to six at the half.

Raymond took a commanding lead after the half with a more aggressive effort.

“(In) the third period, our kids really attacked the basket well and did a great job on defense limiting Onalasaka to tough shots,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said after Raymond’s defense held the Loggers to five points in the third quarter and cut Onalaska’s offensive rebounding from nine in the first half to four in the second half. “Really proud of our kids for stepping up to the physical challenge of a good Onalaska basketball team.”

Gardner led Raymond with 13 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.
