Raymond’s defense of its 2B district title came to a close in a 59-21 loss to Adna on Tuesday at Rochester High School.

Raymond (16-5 overall) was close after one quarter against the Pirates (19-2), trailing 13-9 after the first eight minutes of play.

But the Seagulls offense went cold over the next two quarters, scoring a total of four points — all in the second quarter — to trail 47-13 entering the final period.

“Disappointing night as we let Adna do anything they wanted on the offensive and defensive side of the ball after two days of prepping for them,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “Hopefully, this lesson on competing will transpire into a positive for us Thursday as we have a quick turnaround to play again.”

Raymond was led by sophomore Karsyn Freeman, who scored 11 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. The standout guard’s 11th and final point of the contest gave her exactly 1,000 for her prep career, achieving the accomplishment in three seasons.

Willapa Valley 45, Columbia Adventist 20

Willapa Valley relied on its defense to open its 1B District 4 Tournament with a 45-20 win over Columbia Adventist Academy on Tuesday at Willapa Valley High School.

The Vikings (15-6) missed multiple high-percentage shots near the rim, but by virtue of a defense that held the Kodiaks to just eight points in the first quarter and scoreless in the second, Willapa Valley took a 27-8 lead at halftime.

The Vikings held CAA (3-13) scoreless for 13 minutes from midway through the first quarter until halftime.

“I really thought we were flat coming out. We just weren’t ready to play,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “Thank God we played as good a defense as we did.”

The Vikings were led by senior Grace Huber (17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, assist), freshman Lauren Matlock (11 points, 3 rebounds, 6 steals) and senior Brooklyn Patrick (6 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 10 steals).

Gaby Quezada added seven points and three rebounds for the Vikings.

Willapa Valley went 18 for 74 from the field (24%) and missed approximately 15 layups in the game.

The Vikings had 23 steals in the game to 13 turnovers.

With the victory, Willapa Valley advances to the tournament quarterfinals where it will host the Pe Ell Trojans at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

GIRLS PREP WRESTLING

Aberdeen places second at sub-districts

With two individual weight-class championship victories, Aberdeen placed second as a team at the District 4 North Sub-Regional girls wrestling meet on Saturday in Hoquiam.

The Bobcats scored 174 points to place second behind W.F. West (206 points).

Forks placed third with 134 points. Shelton took fourth with 115 points.

Aberdeen was led by Felicia Bell and Kya Roundtree, both of whom won their respective weight classes.

Bell pinned Centralia’s Willa Phillips 12 seconds into the third round to win the 125-pound title.

Roundtree earned a pinfall win over W.F. West’s Lily Cranfield with two seconds left in the second round to claim the 170-pound championship.

“Felicia was dominant all day. When the whistle blew she was on the attack and she overwhelmed all of her opponents. I’m excited to see how the next few weeks play out for her,” Aberdeen head coach Craig Yakovich said before turning his attention to Roundtree. “Kya, like her teammate Bell, comes out fast and aggressive and picks apart her opponent’s defense. She’s relentless and wears them down. Anyone that matches up against her better be ready because it’s going to be a war on the mat.”

Other Bobcats advancing to this weekend’s regional tournament in Shelton were Micah Turpin (100 pounds, 4th), Zoe Vessey (105, 3rd), Christina Baltazar (105, 4th), Ava Benn (125, 4th), Peityn Munoz (130, 4th), Madison Winter (135, 4th), Kadence Braaten (140, 3rd), Selena Martinez (140, 4th) and Aman Cheema (155, 4th).

“We entered 18 girls in the tournament and 11 advanced and three more are alternates to next week’s regional tournament,” Yakovich said. “Considering only one of the girls wrestling today is a senior, I feel like it was an overall success and definitely a growing experience for the girls.”
