Tuesday Roundup: Montesano, Elma win on the pitch to set up Round 2 of showdown

Also: Monte, Elma, Ocosta win on volleyball court

Montesano and Elma’s top-10 soccer teams each won on Tuesday, setting up Round 2 of a showdown on Thursday with the 1A Evergreen League title likely hanging in the balance.

We also take a look at a busy Tuesday night of volleyball action on the Twin Harbors.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Montesano 2, Eatonville 1

Montesano got a goal in the second half to break a scoreless tie and pick up a 2-1 victory on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (12-1 overall, 6-0 1A Evergreen) — the second-ranked team in the WIAA — got a goal from junior forward Mikayla Stanfield in the first half, but a goal by Eatonville shortly after the break tied the game at 1-1.

Monte got a goal from Sam Roundtree, who had just entered the game as a substitution less than a minute prior, to go ahead 2-1 in the 55th minute.

Montesano held an 11-4 advantage in shots but a more narrow 5-3 edge in shots on-target.

Montesano will square off against Elma for round two of a matchup of the top two league teams at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Elma.

The Bulldogs hold a one-game lead on the Eagles for the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League.

Elma 1, Tenino 0

Elma got a late goal and held Tenino scoreless in a 1-0 win on Tuesday in Tenino.

The 10th-ranked Eagles (12-2, 5-1) broke the scoreless tie in the second half when Grace Spencer sent a long through ball past the Tenino defense. Using her speed, sophomore forward Beta Valentine chased down the ball then beat the Tenino keeper 1-on-1 for a goal in the 62nd minute.

Elma keeper Emmie Spencer recorded the shutout.

Elma head coach Evan Valentine said Tenino packed players into the defensive end in an effort to keep the score from getting out of hand.

“We had good opportunities, we just could convert and finish,” he said. “Tenino slowed the game down and kept it close and tight.”

Elma will face East County rival Montesano in a matchup of the league’s top two teams at 7 p.m. Thursday in Elma.

Aberdeen game postponed

Aberdeen’s game at Rochester originally scheduled on Tuesday, Oct. 18 has been postponed due to air-quality concerns. No rescheduled time/date announced at the time of this writing.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Rochester 3, Aberdeen 2

Aberdeen pushed a game to five sets for the first time this season in a 3-2 loss to Rochester on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (0-10, 0-8 2A Evergreen) just missed their first win of the season in the 17-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-18 and 15-17 loss.

Aberdeen was led by Lilly Camp (17 kills, 2 aces), Cameryn Micheau (32 assists, 3 aces, 8 digs), Alyssa Yakovich (7 digs, 6 aces), Claire Mottinger (10 digs, 2 aces), Emmersyn Yakovich (6 digs) and Zoe Vessey (6 digs).

“Though we were hopeful for our first league win of the season, it was nice to taste some victory and know we are improving, capable and willing to fight for every game,” Aberdeen head coach Desiree Glanz said.

Aberdeen plays at Tumwater at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Montesano 3, Eatonville 1

Montesano put it all together in a straight-set victory over Eatonville on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (8-6 overall, 5-1 1A Evergreen) won 25-16, 25-6 and 25-15.

Monte was led offensively by seniors Ashlynn Devereaux (8 kills, 10 aces), Addie Winter (10 kills) Maia Young (7 kills) and Clara Benton (7 kills).

Monte’s two setters — senior Jordan Karr and sophomore Karissa Otterstetter — recorded 19 and 13 kills apiece, respectively.

“The team played well tonight with a lot of talk, movement on the court and energy,” Monte head coach Pat Pace said.

Montesano’s JV2 team won 2-1 with the JV3 team winning 3-0.

Montesano plays at Elma at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Elma 3, Tenino 0

Elma downed Tenino in straight sets on Tuesday in Tenino.

The Eagles (7-6, 3-3 1A Evergreen) secured at least the league’s No. 3 spot with a 28-26, 25-15 and 25-19 win.

“We started the match off slow but I was proud of how they came together and improved throughout the night,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “We are looking forward to Thursday’s match.”

Aubrey Moore (7 kills, 15 assists) and Brooklyne Swarts (6 kills, 10 assists, 4 aces) led the Eagles.

Elma hosts Montesano at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Ocosta 3, South Bend 0

Ocosta picked up a key league victory in straight sets over South Bend on Tuesday in South Bend.

Ocosta (7-8, 6-4 2B Pacific) downed South Bend (3-8, 3-6) 25-20, 26-24 and 25-12.

The Wildcats were led by Noel Cuzdey, who served seven straight points when the Wildcats were down by five in the second set. Cuzdey had a 100% service ratio and four digs in the game.

Brynn Rasmus (12 assists) and Jolissa Schlegel (7 kills, 5 aces) also played a major role in the Wildcats win, as did middle hitter Alexia Bradley, who had eight kills and seven solo blocks on the evening.

“This is the first game since early September that we have had both Schlegel and Bradley healthy,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said. “I’m very happy with our team’s performance tonight.”

South Bend was led by junior middle hitter Kendall Harriman (16-17 service, 3 aces) and senior outside hitter Raydynn Morley (7 kills).

“We got things going at times, but didn’t take care of the ball when we needed to,” South Bend head coach Kelsey Staats said. “We chose not to communicate, and felt the impact of that in Set 3. The scores reflect that.”

Ocosta plays at Ilwaco while South Bend hosts Chief Leschi on Thursday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Mary M. Knight 3, Wishkah Valley 1

Wishkah Valley lost in four sets to Mary M. Knight on Tuesday.

The Loggers (1-5, 1-5 1B Coastal) recorded 28 aces as a team in the 22-25, 18-25, 26-24 and 22-25 loss.

“Our serving has improved,” said Wishkah head coach Katerina Eaton, who cited the play of Delaney Baltzell and Madelyn Ridgway. “However, we struggled to stay consistent with our communication.”

PWV head coach Josh Fluke named WSFCA Seahawks Coach of the Week

After guiding his team to a 28-14 win over No. 3 Raymond-South Bend on Saturday, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley head football coach Josh Fluke was named one of the Washington State Football Coaches Association’s “Seattle Seahawks Coach of the Week,” Willapa Valley school officials announced on Tuesday.

Coach Fluke will be honored with a group of coaches from across the state at a Seahawks game later this season.
